Dustin Haisler - Featured Speaker

Chief Innovation Officer, e.Republic

Dustin Haisler is the Chief Innovation Officer for e.Republic. As the finance director and later CIO for Manor, TX, a small city outside Austin, Haisler quickly built a track record and reputation as an early innovator in civic tech. A member of Code for America’s original steering committee, Haisler pioneered government use of commercial technologies not before used in the public sector – including Quick- Response (QR) barcodes, crowdsourcing and gamification. In 2010 Haisler launched Manor Labs, a website that let residents submit their own ideas and vote other peoples’ ideas up or down. The most popular suggestions went to city officials for review and possible implementation. Haisler looked to the private sector to help broaden the adoption of these and other civic innovations, joining California-based Spigit as director of government innovation. While at Spigit, a company that makes crowd-sourcing and innovation management software, Hailser helped design and deploy innovation programs for New York City; Bogota, Columbia; and even part of the space program (through NASA’s Langley Research Center).
Notably, Haisler helped design and launch one of the first government open innovation programs in the United States in 2010, which received global recognition as a new model of citizen engagement and innovation. Among other first-in-nation innovations, Haisler architected a Crowdsourcing Master Land Use Plan (Harford County, MD) and patented a crowd-based business process (Crowd-as-a-Service). Named a Government Technology Top 25 Doer, Dreamer and Driver in 2009, his work has been featured in Wired, Fast Company, the Wall Street Journal, Inc. and the Today Show on NBC. An in-demand speaker, he has given two TEDx speeches – one on Disrupting Government (TEDxAustin) and the other on Disrupting Education (TEDxLivermore).
As Chief Innovation Officer, Haisler has a strategic role to help shape the company’s products, services, and future direction. Primarily, he leads e.Republic Labs, a market connector created as an ecosystem to educate, accelerate and ultimately scale technology innovation within the public sector.

It can feel like you’re walking too close to the edge, and the old adage “Don’t look down!” applies just as much to a tough deadline as climbing the sheer face of El Capitan. This discussion looks at emerging trends, developments and strategies on the cyber front and how to get ready for the clashes ahead.

Featured Speaker – Exponential Government: The Future of Public Service

Fir Ballroom

Dustin Haisler, Chief Innovation Officer, e.Republic (@dustinhaisler)

ex·po·nen·tial (adjective): becoming more and more rapid.

The world we knew is changing at exponential speed. The iPhone has eclipsed the Blackberry, mobile devices are displacing PCs, the cloud is radically challenging long-held assumptions about data centers, and the Internet of Things is redefining connectivity. What we regard as state of the art today will look quaint tomorrow as exponential technologies unlock individual, organizational, and societal potential. Along the way, people get scared, old organizational models crumble, and legacy cost structures stop penciling out. Understanding these shifts and how they differ from previous shifts is imperative. This session provides a tour of the meta-trends that are reshaping our communities – demographics, economics, methods of work, customer expectations and the relevance of governmental institutions — all annotated with real world examples. By the end, you’ll have a clearer picture of what Exponential Government will look like, how it will act, and why your actions today can lead you to a preferred exponential future and a more perfect union.

Cloud and Content Management Adoption Strategies

Today, it’s tough to find an organization that doesn’t depend on the cloud for something critical. The question is no longer whether to venture into the cloud, yes or no. Now it’s a matter of “How, what, when and where?” Understanding and anticipating risks, limitations, scope and accountability are critical to success. This session explores the factors to consider before going “all in” (or even partway).

Rich Lauwers, Subject Matter Expert, Information Governance and Management, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (@richlauwers)

Analytics Roadmap

Big Data is pushing organizations to reinvent how they handle and leverage information. Without the right foundation in place, the vast potential of Big Analytics remains largely untapped. It’s all about data readiness, which is driven in turn by adroit and astute data management. This session looks at creative practices and strategies that capitalize on existing data across the enterprise.

Ralf Dossmann, Director, Sales Engineering, Cloud Infrastructure Solutions, Public Sector North America, Oracle

The Physical and Technological Workspace

Society is changing in fundamental ways as each generation adopts technology ever more deeply into their lives. Gone are the days of punching in, sitting down in a cube, and punching out. Collaboration, open plan offices, and stand up meetings are here to stay. The integration of technology and the flexibility of physical space in the workplace can impact productivity and the ability to attract and retain a multigenerational workforce. Hear firsthand how Washington is working to change their pace and break down barriers in the workplace.

Driving Digital Government Transformation with Creativity and Engagement

Shaped by everyday immersive and personalized digital interactions, citizens and employees expect similar experience from the public sector as they are used to with private sector. Now supporting users by uncovering latent needs, behaviors, and desires are considered important design factors. Learn how keeping the end user in in mind can lead to innovative solutions.

Sherry Amos, Director, Market Development, Education and Government, Workday
