Government Technology’s passion is helping spread best practices and spurring innovation in the public sector. The Pennsylvania Digital Government Summit is designed to do just that. The summit has an advisory board that gathers public- and private-sector leaders to create an agenda designed to make that passion relevant and actionable to the state and local government organizations attending the summit. Participants tell us they use the inspirational keynotes, leadership discussions, networking breaks, and the timely topics discussed in the numerous breakout sessions to help advance the goals of their organizations.
This Year’s Topics:
“Whenever we have the opportunity to network with peers, discuss best practices, share lessons learned and explore leading-edge technologies, we need to take full advantage. The annual Pennsylvania Digital Government Summit is the perfect place to do it. We have some big plans in the Commonwealth and we have a lot to talk about. I invite you to attend the Summit and be part of the discussions. I hope to see you there!”

Opening Keynote – Find Your VoiceCarlisle/York RoomJim Meskimen, Master Impressionist and Communication Coach Today’s culture emphasizes the value of teamwork and collaboration, sometimes at the expense of the individual. This is particularly true in the IT arena where you can sometimes find yourself stereotyped, or even worse, not taken seriously by potential stakeholders. What good are insights and solutions if your words get lost in the crowd? You need to make sure that you’re heard! Jim Meskimen has spent the past 30 years studying the most famous, creative and interesting people in modern times. In this fascinating and hilarious session, Jim discusses – and illustrates – the traits and methods used by some of the best and most charismatic communicators in the world. Don’t settle for being “one of the crowd”. YOU have a unique identity. YOU have a voice! |

Concurrent SessionsLeveraging Big Data from Start to FinishGettysburgGovernment by nature is in the data collection business, so there is no shortage of information from which to extract actionable insights. The challenge for agencies is to reinvent how they handle and leverage the vast amounts (and varieties) of the information they collect. This session looks at ways to exploit it by using data management tools and analytics to drive faster, smarter decisions. Dr. Rod Fontecilla, Vice President, Application Services & Chief Data Scientist, Federal & Commercial Agency, Unisys The Future of IT InfrastructureLancasterOdds are that you’re currently wrestling with the inability of your existing IT infrastructure to keep up with the escalating demands of big data, mobility, cloud, transparency, security, “as a service”, et al. The status quo is probably not sustainable for much longer. So where do you go from here and how fast should you try to get there? This session discusses modern infrastructure trends and options and ways to realistically evaluate needs and objectives. Michael Shevlin, Director/Chief Information Officer, Pennsylvania State Police, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania View Shevlin Presentation Here James Weaver, Chief Technology Officer, Office of Administration, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania View Weaver Presentation Here Mobility and Government ServicesLeland BoardroomWe’ve passed a tipping point. Internet usage on mobile devices has now surpassed desktop access, meaning that IT has to think mobile-first (and perhaps ultimately mobile-only) in almost everything it does. Challenges include security, identity management, location-based services and app development. This session discusses where we’re headed and how to keep up in an increasingly mobile world. General Session – Breach! When Bad Things Happen to Good People (and Their Organizations)Carlisle/York RoomCyber security is the new front line of financial crime and social upheaval. It is the new Wild West, with hackers divided among the "white hats" and "black hats." Stage coach and bank robberies of old have been replaced by heists of personally identifiable information from major retailers, insurers and governments. Political protests are increasingly taking the form of denial-of-service attacks by so-called “hactivists” to disrupt the normal order of things. Such things can and do happen anywhere, and everybody has a role in preventing, preparing for, and responding to cyber threats. This interactive session unpacks key lessons and learnings from real-life cases with the help of a panel of security experts. Moderator: Jack Mortimer, Government Technology magazine Panelists: DuWayne Aikins, Senior Cyber Security Strategist, AT&T Erik Avakian, Chief Information Security Officer, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Michael Roling, Chief Information Security Officer, State of Missouri |

Concurrent SessionsCyber Security Trends and TribulationsGettysburgOne question about security is very easy to answer: "Are we 100% digitally secure?" The answer is always "no," of course. There are no absolutes, and that's particularly true for security. But there are ways to tilt the odds in your favor. This session focuses on evaluating the latest threats, gauging risk factors, shoring up defenses, and maybe even sleeping a little better at night. Erik Avakian, Chief Information Security Officer, Office of Administration, Commonwealth of Pennsylvania John Cassidy, Director, Cyber Security Division, CenturyLink Citizen Engagement – The Key to Open GovernmentLancasterIt’s a highly interactive and fast-paced society, and people are getting more demanding about, well, everything. It’s not easy for government to keep up with private industry in regard to services and engagement, but it’s far from impossible. This session provides a glimpse into the future of open, participatory and self-service government and the innovations and technologies that are leading the way. Fast Track SessionsCarlisle/York RoomGame of DronesOnce you leave your house you’re in the public domain and there are digital eyes everywhere. Whether that’s good or bad depends on one’s point of view. But drones (unmanned aerial vehicles) bring a whole new element to the equation. This session discusses the issues, challenges and opportunities raised by what is sure to be a game-changing technology in government. Scott Drzyzga, PhD, GISP, Associate Professor, Shippensburg University Disruptive Personal TechnologiesWithout a doubt, technology is defining the way we live, work, play and govern. The adjective “disruptive” is probably an understatement when applied to trends such as wearables, ever-smarter devices, robotics and the Internet of Things.
