Government Technology’s passion is helping spread best practices and spurring innovation in the public sector. The New York Digital Government Summit is designed to do just that. The summit has an advisory board that gathers public sector and private sector leaders to create an agenda designed to make that passion relevant and actionable to the state and local government organizations attending the summit. Participants tell us they use the inspirational keynotes, leadership discussions, networking breaks, and timely topics discussed in the numerous breakout sessions to help advance the goals of their organizations and their own career paths.
This Year’s Topics Include:
The New York Digital Government Summit, to be held on September 15 and 16, is an excellent opportunity for New York State IT professionals to learn from IT leaders across all levels of government and industry. I encourage New York’s technology workforce to take advantage of the free training delivered at the Summit – to learn about emerging technologies and developments in the industry; to discuss best practices and challenges to deploying innovative technology solutions; and to explore how the use of technology can increase economic development, and deliver a better future for New Yorkers. The Summit is also a great opportunity to network with IT leaders from across the State who are committed to advancing New York’s digital agenda.

Keynote – Leading on the EdgeGovernor’s BallroomManley Feinberg, World-class Climber, Adventurer and IT Leader (@manleyf) IT officials often struggle to deliver more value under tightening constraints and rising expectations. Throw in the complications of regulations, a changing workforce, constantly evolving technology, plus the chaos of day-to-day life, and you are facing some serious challenges. It can feel like you’re walking too close to the edge, and the old adage “Don’t look down!” applies just as much to a tough deadline as climbing the sheer face of El Capitan. Manley Feinberg has tackled and conquered impossible environments – from breakneck corporate expansion to nature’s most hostile terrains. In this unforgettable keynote, Manley reveals his 8 Vertical Lessons that will enable you to lead, contribute and inspire in ways that will take you – and your teams – to bold new heights. |

Featured Speaker – Expectations of a Constantly Connected GenerationGovernor’s BallroomMichael Hakkarinen, Instructional Technology Specialist, Utah Education Network (@edtechakk) Technology is transforming society in fundamental ways as new generations grow up using portable digital devices, often before they can even walk or talk. In this 24/7 online world we take connectivity and engagement for granted, evolving into a digitally divided society. The haves and have nots, the online and the disconnected, the technically savvy and the digitally discouraged. From millennials to baby boomers the differences between our generational expectations is growing and a new "fear of the young" has emerged. In this session we will discuss the challenges and opportunities that IT professionals face, and ask the difficult questions necessary to bring our culture together in a truly connected environment. |

Concurrent SessionsBreaking Silos – Better Together Than ApartHudson Ballroom (Level A)The benefits of collaboration and shared services are a déjà vu moment for those who've been involved in the effort over the years. Featured Speaker – Exponential Government: The Future of Public ServiceGovernor’s BallroomCathilea Robinett, President, eRepublic, Inc. ex·po·nen·tial (adjective): becoming more and more rapid. The world we knew is changing at exponential speed. The iPhone has eclipsed the Blackberry, mobile devices are displacing PCs, the cloud is radically challenging long-held assumptions about data centers, and the Internet of Things is redefining connectivity. What we regard as state of the art today will look quaint tomorrow as exponential technologies unlock individual, organizational, and societal potential. Along the way, people get scared, old organizational models crumble, and legacy cost structures stop penciling out. Understanding these shifts and how they differ from previous shifts is imperative. This session provides a tour of the meta-trends that are reshaping our communities – demographics, economics, methods of work, customer expectations and the relevance of governmental institutions — all annotated with real world examples. By the end, you’ll have a clearer picture of what Exponential Government will look like, how it will act, and why your actions today can lead you to a preferred exponential future and a more perfect union. |

General SessionGovernor’s BallroomCognitive Technologies – Helping us to Outthink Real ProblemsCognitive is defined as intellectual activity, in other words, what humans do. The cognitive systems era, which is the most exciting phase of enterprise transformation in more than a century, is upon us. Cognitive technology mimics human activities such as perceiving, inferring, gathering evidence, hypothesizing, and reasoning. And when combined with advanced automation, these systems can be trained to execute judgment-intensive tasks. Companies are investing billions in developing cognitive-based systems, such as IBM Watson, and we are already seeing some incredible results across all sectors of society. This session provides an introduction to a technology that has enormous potential and implications for our future civilization. The revolution has started. Are you ready? Tim Paydos, Vice President, World Wide Government Cognitive Solutions Team, IBM (@timpaydos) Disaster Preparedness and ResponseRecent disasters have shown more than ever the critical role of technology in ensuring public safety and continuity of government operations. UAlbany’s College of Emergency Preparedness, Homeland Security and Cybersecurity will share their first-hand experience and lessons learned around disaster preparedness and response and some of the new technologies being developed to keep New Yorker’s safe.
