Government Technology’s passion is helping spread best practices and spurring innovation in the public sector. The Nevada Digital Government Summit is designed to do just that. The summit has an advisory board that gathers public sector and private sector leaders to create an agenda designed to make that passion relevant and actionable to the state and local government organizations attending the summit. Participants tell us they use the inspirational keynotes, leadership discussions, networking breaks, and timely topics discussed in the numerous breakout sessions to help advance the goals of their organizations and their own career paths.

Throw in the complications of regulations, a changing workforce, constantly evolving technology, plus the chaos of day-to-day life, and you are facing some serious challenges. It can feel like you’re walking too close to the edge, and the old adage “Don’t look down!” applies just as much to a tough deadline as climbing the sheer face of El Capitan. Manley Feinberg has tackled and conquered impossible environments – from breakneck corporate expansion to nature’s most hostile terrains. Concurrent SessionsThe Future of CybersecurityCapital RoomIt’s an old adage that the cyber landscape is constantly shifting. But some things remain unchanged. Attacks are still efforts to rob, disrupt or avenge. Motives are still economic, political or cultural. The overall battlefield remains much the same but the weapons and tactics continue to evolve – often dramatically. This session looks at emerging trends, developments and strategies on the cyber front to prepare a roadmap for the clashes ahead. Ronald Hamilton, Vice President, Security Solutions Division, PTP Scott Horton, Senior Security Strategist, AT&T Chris Ipsen, Assistant Vice President for Technology/Chief Information Officer, Desert Research Institute Data, Data and More DataParamount RoomBig data, the Internet of Things, video, social media, et al., are pushing organizations to reinvent how they handle and leverage information. Unless the right foundation is in place, the vast potential of Big Analytics remains largely untapped. It’s all about data readiness, which hinges on adroit and astute data governance. This session looks at creative practices and strategies that capitalize on data management opportunities across the enterprise. Bharat Bagaria, Director, Consulting Services, CGI Carol Brock, CRM, Industry and Value Marketing Strategist, Public Sector, OpenText Inner Workings of a High Flying 24/7 IT ShopRainbow RoomWhat happens in Vegas doesn’t always stay in Vegas. More than 45 million passengers travel through McCarran International Airport each year. The economic continuity of the Las Vegas area depends in part on their smooth running operations. More than 20,000 devices are managed by the 24/7 IT shop and there are thousands of additional devices operated by airlines and vendors. This session will discuss the multi-agency collaboration and efficiency of operations required to keep LAS up and flying. Samuel Ingalls, Assistant Director of Aviation, Information Systems, McCarran International Airport The Power of the Digital CitizenChairman RoomTechnology is transforming society in fundamental ways as new generations grow up using digital devices before they can walk or talk. Many experts believe we are already reaching another inflection point in our digital lives. Needless to say, this puts pressure on government agencies to keep up with the times and – better yet – stay ahead of the curve in terms of managing and securing the data generated by digital citizenship while using that data to enhance the citizen experience. This session takes a look at how government is employing a citizen-centric approach to technology solutions to make government services more accessible and effective for everyone. Featured Speaker - Peak Academy: What Would MacGyver Do?Renaissance Ballroom Salons I/IIBrian Elms, Director, Peak Academy and Analytics, City and County of Denver, Colorado In March, CBS announced the reboot of MacGyver. Like the 1980s when the original TV series garnered a large following because of the inventive and resourceful character, today’s challenges mean we could use another MacGyver. The Denver Peak Academy fixes problems by helping public employees become somebody’s MacGyver – helping the City and County of Denver eliminate waste and continuously improve its business processes. Along the way, it has refined its processes by integrating behavioral science and extending its reach to public agencies from across North America. The academy experience is the subject of a new book from the Governing Management Series called Peak Performance. The coauthor, Brian Elms, will explore how to innovate in a resource-deprived environment including; Peak’s approach to process improvement and innovations, innovating without technology, and Peak’s tools and techniques. |

Concurrent SessionsPathway to the CloudCapital RoomToday it’s tough to find an organization that doesn’t depend on the cloud for something critical. The question is no longer whether to venture into the cloud, yes or no. Now it’s a matter of “How, what, when and where?” Understanding and anticipating risks, limitations, scope, options and accountability are critical to success – and survival. This session explores the practical factors to consider before going “all in” (or even partway). Greg Hearn, Senior Information Technology Manager, Administration & Infrastructure, Las Vegas Valley Water District Jim Lemaire, Information Security Officer, Department of Public Safety, State of Nevada Duncan Puller, Vice President, Cloud Strategy, Ciena Cybersecurity: A 360 ApproachParamount RoomOne question about security is very easy to answer: “Are we 100% digitally secure?” The answer is always “no,” of course. There are no absolutes, and that's particularly true for security. But there are ways to tilt the odds in your favor. This session focuses on having a holistic approach to state-wide cybersecurity. This discussion will cover how to gauge risk factors and reduce liability through specific actions including creating organization wide security awareness training and implementing a cyber insurance program. John E. McClurg, Vice President and Ambassador-At-Large, Cylance James R. Patterson, Western Region Network Security & Privacy Specialist, AIG Shanna Rahming, Chief Information Officer, State of Nevada Steve Williams, Director of Strategic Partnerships, MediaPro E-Sign On the Dotted LineRainbow RoomIt’s not that often a citizen or a business owner gets excited about signing a government document. Is it legal? And more importantly is it safe? Does the device matter? What about fraud? Across the nation, State & Local governments are using e-signatures to streamline, eliminate waste and do more with less. Electronic signatures have replaced pen and paper in many areas of government business. This session will give you new insight into tools developed based on new strategies and lessons learned from peer organizations. Noah G. Allison Esq., Founder, The Allison Law Firm Chtd. Fast Track SessionsRenaissance Ballroom Salons I/IIInternet of Things and Its Impact on GovernmentThe Internet of Things (IoT) is a series of billions – soon to be trillions – of sensors and devices connected to one another via the Internet. Most of it is automated, and the possibilities that IoT brings to society are the stuff of science fiction. But it’s all very real, and the question on many people’s minds: Is government ready? This session explores the role of government in using, exploiting, controlling, securing and surviving the hyper-connected world of IoT. Tony Gillespie, US Public Sector Strategist, ForeScout Technologies Budgeting and Procurement: A New ApproachTechnology procurement can be a long, expensive – and sometimes painful – endeavor for everyone involved. The outcome of decisions can also be a mystery to the teams who then deliver projects. It doesn’t have to be that way though. This session lifts the curtain on government procurement and discusses new tools, collaborative and rapid procurement approaches and how to incorporate them. Dugan Petty, Education & Outreach Coordinator, National Association of State Procurement Officials (NASPO) Value Point IT – It’s DebatableLas Vegas plays host to hundreds of large scale events each year. In October 2016 the University of Nevada Las Vegas hosted the 3rd presidential debate. With close to 65 million watching how did UNLV ready itself for the additional strain on IT systems? This session explores how the University coordinated with dozens of vendors to ensure a seamless debate with the world watching.
