Government Technology’s passion is helping spread best practices and spurring innovation in the public sector. The Massachusetts Digital Government Summit is designed to do just that. The summit has an advisory board that gathers public sector and private sector leaders to create an agenda designed to make that passion relevant and actionable to the state and local government organizations attending the summit. Participants tell us they use the inspirational keynotes, leadership discussions, networking breaks, and timely topics discussed in the numerous breakout sessions to help advance the goals of their organizations and their own career paths.
This Year’s Topics Include:
Every year the Digital Summit is the cornerstone of collaboration and innovation among the Commonwealth’s civic tech community. I look forward to seeing leaders from the private, public, and nonprofit communities come together to tackle some of our state’s most pressing IT problems at this year’s conference.

Opening Keynote - Leading on the EdgeGrand Ballroom AManley Feinberg, World-class Climber, Adventurer and IT Leader IT officials often struggle to deliver more value under tightening constraints and rising expectations. Throw in the complications of regulations, a changing workforce, constantly evolving technology, plus the chaos of day-to-day life, and you are facing some serious challenges. It can feel like you’re walking too close to the edge, and the old adage “Don’t look down!” applies just as much to a tough deadline as climbing the sheer face of El Capitan. Manley Feinberg has tackled and conquered impossible environments – from breakneck corporate expansion to nature’s most hostile terrains. In this unforgettable keynote, Manley reveals his 8 Vertical Lessons that will enable you to lead, contribute and inspire in ways that will take you – and your teams – to bold new heights. |

Concurrent SessionsNo Phishing AllowedGeorgianGovernment organizations are under attack and the stakes have never been higher. Threats of all types are increasingly sophisticated and better organized. Spear phishing and ransomware are becoming full-fledged industries with remarkably low barriers to entry. This session looks at the elements necessary to predict, prepare for, and defend against today’s most insidious threats. Eric C. Dunham, Information Technology Security & Business Continuity Consultant, HUB Technical Services Terry Hect, Chief Security Strategist, AT&T Dennis McDermitt, Chief Information Security Officer, MassIT, Commonwealth of Massachusetts Data, Data and More DataStatlerBig data, the Internet of Things, video, social media, et al., are pushing organizations to reinvent how they handle and leverage information. Unless the right foundation is in place, the vast potential of Big Analytics remains largely untapped. It’s all about data readiness, which hinges on adroit and astute data governance. This session looks at creative practices and strategies that capitalize on data opportunities across the enterprise. Holly St. Clair, Chief Digital Officer, MassIT, Commonwealth of Massachusetts Timothy Reardon, Director of Data Services, Metropolitan Area Planning Council Diana Zavala, Director, Analytics & Data Management, US Public Sector, Hewlett Packard Enterprise Hyperconvergence, Data Center Evolution, and MoreArlingtonIs the data center dead? Not by any means. But the ground is shifting under the weight of trends such as XaaS (anything as a service), software-defined data centers, and hyperconvergence (i.e., integrating compute, storage, virtualization resources, networking, and other components). This session takes a look at some new technologies and approaches that are challenging conventional paradigms. Lenore Bernashe, Information Technology Manager, City of Westfield Chuck Kausch, Enterprise Technical Specialist, SLED, Intel Adam Provost, Senior Systems Engineer, New England, Nutanix Design Thinking in GovernmentBerkeley/ClarendonThere may be no better place for human-centered design than government. After all, government is all about servicing its customers without any ulterior motives such as profits or stock valuation. It’s a noble pursuit with nearly limitless possibilities. This session discusses how to start incorporating Design Thinking into all phases of the problem-solving process. Featured Speaker - Exponential Government: The Future of Public ServiceGrand Ballroom APatrick Moore, Senior Fellow, Center for Digital Government ex·po·nen·tial (adjective): becoming more and more rapid. The world we knew is changing at exponential speed. The iPhone has eclipsed the Blackberry, mobile devices are displacing PCs, the cloud is radically challenging long-held assumptions about data centers, and the Internet of Things is redefining connectivity. What we regard as state of the art today will look quaint tomorrow as exponential technologies unlock individual, organizational, and societal potential. Along the way, people get scared, old organizational models crumble, and legacy cost structures stop penciling out. Understanding these shifts and how they differ from previous shifts is imperative. This session provides a tour of the meta-trends that are reshaping our communities – demographics, economics, methods of work, customer expectations and the relevance of governmental institutions — all annotated with real world examples. By the end, you’ll have a clearer picture of what Exponential Government will look like, how it will act, and why your actions today can lead you to a preferred exponential future and a more perfect union. |

Concurrent SessionsPathway to the CloudGeorgianToday, it’s tough to find an organization that doesn’t depend on the cloud for something critical. The question is no longer whether to venture into the cloud, yes or no. Now, it’s a matter of “How, what, when and where?” Understanding and anticipating risks, limitations, scope, opportunity and accountability are critical to success. This session explores the factors to consider before going “all in” (or even partway). Charlie Desourdy, Chief Operating Officer, MassIT, Commonwealth of Massachusetts Francessca Vasquez, Group Vice President, Sales Engineering, Cloud & Infrastructure, Oracle The Internet of Things and the Impact on GovernmentArlingtonThe Internet of Things (IoT) is a series of billions – soon to be trillions – of sensors and devices connected to one another via the Internet. Most of it is automated, and the possibilities that IoT brings to society are the stuff of science fiction. But it’s all very real, and the question on many people’s minds: Is government ready? This session explores the role of government in using, exploiting, controlling, securing and surviving the hyper-connected world of IoT. Mohini Singh Dukes, Senior Enterprise Cloud Marketing Manager, Juniper Networks Sean Telles, Manager of Systems Engineering, Public Sector State & Local, ForeScout Technologies Next Generation Workforce – How to Recruit, Retain and SurviveBerkeley/ClarendonThe average Baby Boomer is now 60 while the average Millennial is 25, and Millennials have supplanted Boomers as the largest generation in history. This has enormous implications in the public sector workplace, not the least of which is an incalculable loss of institutional knowledge. But it goes beyond a brain drain; it also encompasses an influx of entirely different attitudes, expectations and knowledge. This session discusses what’s at stake and how to best prepare for the challenges ahead. Fast Track SessionsGrand Ballroom AMoneyball for Government? The sports world might get the most publicity but virtually every industry is being revolutionized by big data and analytics. Government is no exception but – just like Moneyball – groundbreaking success requires stepping outside the box and viewing data in entirely new ways. This session offers an outstanding example of how analytics can pay off in a big way. Laura Schweitzer, Managing Director, Health Services Analytics, PwC An Agnostic View of FlashStorage has always been driven by faster, safer, cheaper, bigger. It always will be. So what’s next for the industry? Are spinning hard disks going away? Will flash take over completely? Well, it’s not quite that simple. This session takes a look at current trends and breakthroughs in the world of storage. Joe Clark, Product Manager, Advanced Storage, ViON Corporation The Streets of BostonIt is quickly becoming apparent that the smart cities movement is being driven primarily by transportation, and Boston is all-in.
