Government Technology’s passion is helping spread best practices and spurring innovation in the public sector. The Massachusetts Digital Government Summit is designed to do just that. The summit has an advisory board that gathers public- and private-sector leaders to create an agenda designed to make that passion relevant and actionable to the state and local government organizations attending the summit. Participants tell us they use the inspirational keynotes, leadership discussions, networking breaks, and the timely topics discussed in the numerous breakout sessions to help advance the goals of their organizations.
This Year’s Topics:
“Across Massachusetts, our state and local governments are working together – more closely and effectively than ever before – to leverage the benefits of technology and innovation in our work to meet an enormous range of constituent needs. Each year for more than two decades, the Massachusetts Digital Government Summit has given public sector IT workers from across the Commonwealth a singular opportunity to discuss challenges, share best practices, and think strategically about how our work can help drive better government. I hope you’ll join us.”

Opening Keynote – Find Your VoiceImperial BallroomJim Meskimen, Master Impressionist and Communication Coach Today’s culture emphasizes the value of teamwork and collaboration, sometimes at the expense of the individual. This is particularly true in the IT arena where you can sometimes find yourself stereotyped, or even worse, not taken seriously by potential stakeholders. What good are insights and solutions if your words get lost in the crowd? You need to make sure that you’re heard! Jim Meskimen has spent the past 30 years studying the most famous, creative and interesting people in modern times. In this fascinating and hilarious session, Jim discusses – and illustrates – the traits and methods used by some of the best and most charismatic communicators in the world. Don’t settle for being “one of the crowd”. YOU have a unique identity. YOU have a voice! |

The answer is always "no," of course. There are no absolutes, and that's particularly true for security. But there are ways to tilt the odds in your favor. This session focuses on evaluating the latest threats, gauging risk factors, shoring up defenses, and maybe even sleeping a little better at night. Kevin Burns, Chief Information Security Officer, MassIT, Commonwealth of Massachusetts Eric C. Dunham, Information Technology Security & Business Continuity Consultant, HUB Technical Leveraging Networks and Automation across the EnterpriseArlington RoomOdds are that you’re currently wrestling with the inability of your existing networks to keep up with the escalating demands of big data, mobility, cloud, transparency, security, “as a service”, et al. This session explores possibilities in automation, virtualization and software-defined networks. General Session – Breach! When Bad Things Happen to Good People (and Their Organizations)Imperial BallroomCyber security is the new front line of financial crime and social upheaval. It is the new Wild West, with hackers divided among the "white hats" and "black hats." Stage coach and bank robberies of old have been replaced by heists of personally identifiable information from major retailers, insurers and governments. Political protests are increasingly taking the form of denial-of-service attacks by so-called “hactivists” to disrupt the normal order of things. Such things can and do happen anywhere, and everybody has a role in preventing, preparing for, and responding to cyber threats. This interactive session unpacks key lessons and learnings from real-life cases with the help of a panel of security experts. Moderator: Jack Mortimer, Government Technology magazine Panelists: DuWayne E. Concurrent SessionsBig Data and Meaningful AnalyticsGeorgian RoomSociety’s appetite for data is downright insatiable. It’s estimated that the world’s information doubles every 18 months, and this is certainly true in the public sector. Government agencies have no shortage of data from which to extract actionable insights. This session looks at how to capitalize on existing data by using sharper analytics to drive smarter decisions. Neal Fishman, Program Director, Database Pathology, IBM Kay Meyer, Principal Industry Consultant, State and Local Government, SAS Future of MobilityArlington RoomWe’ve passed a tipping point. Internet usage on mobile devices has now surpassed desktop access, meaning that IT has to think mobile-first (and perhaps ultimately mobile-only) in almost everything it does. This session discusses where we’re headed and how to keep up in an increasingly mobile world. Vicki Judd, Enterprise Manager, State & Local Government NE, Citrix Todd Smith, Sales Engineering Manager, U.S. Commercial – Northeast, Citrix Procurement Strategies for Cloud and “XaaS”Berkeley/Clarendon RoomToday, almost anything can be delivered via the Cloud “as a service”: software, mobile apps, infrastructure, storage, platforms, data, you name it. The possibilities and configurations are endless and they introduce a variety of procurement challenges. This session explores the nature of “cloud enablement” and practical strategies for government organizations.
