Government Technology’s passion is helping spread best practices and spurring innovation in the public sector. The Maryland Digital Government Summit is designed to do just that. The summit has an advisory board that gathers public sector and private sector leaders to create an agenda designed to make that passion relevant and actionable to the state and local government organizations attending the summit. Participants tell us they use the inspirational keynotes, leadership discussions, networking breaks, and timely topics discussed in the numerous breakout sessions to help advance the goals of their organizations and their own career paths.
This Year’s Topics Include:
Technology is fundamentally changing society, which in turn forces us to find new ways to run the business of government. It’s a team effort and together we’ll find enterprise solutions that can help launch a new era of efficiency and innovation. The timing of the Maryland Digital Government Summit couldn’t be better. Let’s use this opportunity to brainstorm ways to move beyond traditional boundaries and methodologies. I encourage you to join the discussions and I look forward to seeing you there!

Keynote – Leading on the EdgeConcourse Ballroom A/BManley Feinberg, World-class Climber, Adventurer and IT Leader IT officials often struggle to deliver more value under tightening constraints and rising expectations. Throw in the complications of regulations, a changing workforce, constantly evolving technology, plus the chaos of day-to-day life, and you are facing some serious challenges. It can feel like you’re walking too close to the edge, and the old adage “Don’t look down!” applies just as much to a tough deadline as climbing the sheer face of El Capitan. Manley Feinberg has tackled and conquered impossible environments – from breakneck corporate expansion to nature’s most hostile terrains. In this unforgettable keynote, Manley reveals his 8 Vertical Lessons that will enable you to lead, contribute and inspire in ways that will take you – and your teams – to bold new heights. |

Concurrent SessionsCybersecurity – How Do I Know When I’m Doing Enough?Concourse Ballroom COne question about security is very easy to answer: "Are we 100% digitally secure?" The answer is always "no," of course. There are no absolutes, and that's particularly true for security. But there are ways to tilt the odds in your favor, one of which is to set realistic baselines. This session focuses on evaluating the latest threats, gauging risk factors, shoring up defenses, and maybe even sleeping a little better at night. DuWayne E. Aikins, Senior Strategist Cyber Security, AT&T Charles Ames, Director of Cybersecurity, Department of Information Technology, State of Maryland Steve Caimi, Industry Solutions Specialist, US Public Sector, Cisco Systems Internet of Things and Its Impact on GovernmentConcourse Ballroom DThe Internet of Things (IoT) is a series of billions – soon to be trillions – of sensors and devices connected to one another via the Internet. Most of it is automated, and the possibilities that IoT brings to society are the stuff of science fiction. But it’s all very real, and the question on many people’s minds: Is government ready? This session explores the role of government in using, exploiting, controlling and surviving the hyper-connected world of IoT. Richard Dye, CHART Systems Administrator, Maryland State Highway Administration Wallace Sann, Chief Technology Officer, Public Sector, ForeScout Technologies (@wsann) Collaboration in Maryland – It’s Alive!Coal Harbor RoomCollaboration might have had a bad rap a decade ago, but times have changed. Moderator: Jim McCormick, Director, Technologies Office, Caroline County Kevin Combs, Chief Information Officer, Department of Public Safety & Correctional Services, State of Maryland Al Short, Cybersecurity Director, Department of Transportation, State of Maryland Don Spicer, Associate Vice Chancellor and Chief Information Officer, University System of Maryland |

Concurrent SessionsFuture of Data Centers (and Computing)Concourse Ballroom CIs the data center dead? Not by any means. But the ground is shifting under the weight of trends such as XaaS (anything as a service), software-defined data centers, and hyperconvergence (i.e., integrating compute, storage, virtualization resources, networking, and other components). This session takes a look at some new technologies and approaches that are challenging conventional paradigms. Moderator: Greg Urban, Chief Operating Officer, Department of Information Technology, State of Maryland Matt Lawson, Principal Architect, State and Local Government and Education (SLED), NetApp (@lawson_matt) Dwayne MacKenzie, Solutions Architect, Sales/Engineering, Data Networks John “J” Pyne, Program Manager, Operations, ViON (@jjpyne3rd) Agile ITConcourse Ballroom DConventional project management and software development are deliberate and orderly, emphasizing rigorous specification and planning. Today, however, our consumer-centric society is speeding up the pace of development and response, leading to far shorter windows and putting a strain on traditional methodologies. This session looks into current thinking about how, when and why an agile approach is the right way to go. Luis Estrada, Deputy Secretary of Information Technology, Department of Information Technology, State of Maryland Tom Fusting, Chief Technology Officer, Department of Human Resources, State of Maryland Procurement – Where Are We Headed?Coal Harbor RoomAlmost no one likes the procurement process. Most agree that it’s a broken system in need of reform, particularly in the cloud era. But hope is in the air. Advances in technology and data – along with growing economic pressures – are driving more innovative and collaborative purchasing strategies. This session discusses the future of procurement and what we can do right now to make the most of the process. Featured Speaker – Open Data for…All?Concourse Ballroom A/BVictoria Lewis, dataMontgomery Project Manager, Department of Technology Services, Montgomery County Government (@dataMontgomery) Open data is a trend that can’t be ignored. Not for long, anyway. There are just too many tangible benefits. But before taking the leap, there are some common misconceptions to clear up regarding what starting and running an open data program really entails. This session tackles these myths and discusses the real-life efforts required to launch and maintain a successful open data program. |

Featured Speaker – Transforming Government: IT’s Seat at the TableConcourse Ballroom A/BDavid Garcia, Secretary, Department of Information Technology, State of Maryland Governor Hogan has charged his administration with changing Maryland for the better, and it’s clear that IT is expected to play a crucial role in making it happen. Success is in direct proportion to the degree that IT aligns with business processes and – most importantly – business objectives. So how does IT become a strategic partner? It’s more than just gaining a seat at the table. It goes deeper than that, requiring a day-to-day focus and viewpoint that goes beyond “business as usual”. In this heartening session, Secretary Garcia paints a new image of IT services in the State of Maryland. |
