Government Technology’s passion is helping spread best practices and spurring innovation in the public sector. COVITS is designed to do just that. The summit has an advisory board that gathers public- and private-sector leaders to create an agenda designed to make that passion relevant and actionable to the state and local government organizations attending the summit. Participants tell us they use the inspirational keynotes, leadership discussions, networking breaks, and the timely topics discussed in the numerous breakout sessions to help advance the goals of their organizations.
This Year’s Topics Include:
“Virginia is 100% committed to enriching its citizen services through the innovative use of technology, so we are redoubling our efforts to accelerate the Commonwealth to new heights in digital government. The 18th annual COVITS is integral to our planning because it is one of the few times during the year when we will gather in one place to discuss strategies, possibilities, collaborations and lessons learned. The day and a half at COVITS is indeed time well-spent, and we encourage you to be an active part of the proceedings. We hope to see you there!

Opening Keynote – Find Your VoiceCapital Ballroom E/F/GJim Meskimen, Master Impressionist and Communication Coach Today’s culture emphasizes the value of teamwork and collaboration, sometimes at the expense of the individual. This is particularly true in the IT arena where you can sometimes find yourself stereotyped, or even worse, not taken seriously by potential stakeholders. What good are insights and solutions if your words get lost in the crowd? You need to make sure that you’re heard! Jim Meskimen has spent the past 30 years studying the most famous, creative and interesting people in modern times. In this fascinating and hilarious session, Jim discusses – and illustrates – the traits and methods used by some of the best and most charismatic communicators in the world. Don’t settle for being “one of the crowd”. YOU have a unique identity. YOU have a voice! |

General Session – Breach! When Bad Things Happen to Good People (and Their Organizations)Capital Ballroom E/F/GCyber security is the new front line of financial crime and social upheaval. It is the new Wild West, with hackers divided among the "white hats" and "black hats." Stage coach and bank robberies of old have been replaced by heists of personally identifiable information from major retailers, insurers and governments. Political protests are increasingly taking the form of denial-of-service attacks by so-called “hactivists” to disrupt the normal order of things. Such things can and do happen anywhere, and everybody has a role in preventing, preparing for, and responding to cyber threats. This interactive session unpacks key lessons and learnings from real-life cases with the help of a panel of security experts. Fast Track SessionsCapital Ballroom E/F/GGame of DronesOnce you leave your house you’re in the public domain. There are electronic eyes everywhere. Whether that’s good or bad depends on one’s point of view. This session takes a look at some of the nifty (and perhaps unsettling) technologies out there, including drones, body cams, video surveillance, and their impact on government and society as a whole. Secretary Brian Moran, Office of Public Safety and Homeland Security, Commonwealth of Virginia Next Gen 911Legacy systems are all too common in government and 911 is a prime example. By most standards, it has not kept up with the technologies used in today’s wireless and mobile society. But that’s changing quickly as the industry takes steps to leverage cutting-edge technologies. This session offers a great example of how to modernize and transform a critical public service. Dorothy A.
