KeynoteFir BallroomWhat’s Your Story?Kelly Swanson, Strategic Narrative Specialist IT is an adventure. Or should be! Every project is a journey, and we need to be better at promoting what we’re doing and accomplishing by painting pictures that resonate. Data alone is not enough anymore. It’s already over-used, mis-used, abused and fake-newsed. The key is wrapping your data in a way that makes people care. You need the secret ingredient that is probably missing from presentations, pitches, speeches and any situation where you are trying to move the needle. In this mind-expanding session, you will find out how to go from manipulating to motivating, from communicating to connecting, from telling people what to do to making them want to do it. Learn from the master! |

This session offers a current look at the most feared and notorious cyberthreats and how to minimize your vulnerability. This session discusses why 5G is a game-changer for the future and how to be ready for its arrival. Ted Bailey, Cooperative Automated Transportation Program Manager, Multimodal Development and Delivery, Department of Transportation, State of Washington Rick Woidyla, Manager, Business Development and Strategic Planning, Smart Communities, Verizon Becoming Citizen-CentricRainier RoomPeople don’t expect the public sector to be just like Uber or Lyft, but they are accustomed to a certain level of ease when it comes to buying and receiving goods and services - typically through a click of a button on their smartphone. In this fast-paced world and a soaring demand to be customer-centric, how does government keep up? This session dives into why standing still isn’t an option and why it’s critical to drive forward with innovative citizen experience strategies in mind. Moderator: Viggo Forde, Director of IT and Chief Information Officer, Department of Information Technology, Snohomish County Jason Civjan, UX Team Manager, Academic Experience Design and Delivery, UW-IT, University of Washington Stephanie Otto, Senior Director of Innovation, Cask Mark Ronaldson, Sales Manager, Amazon Web Services The What, When and How of Data WarehousingOlympic RoomTechnology in every discipline is evolving rapidly but none quite as fast as the revolution happening today in data: storage, warehousing, real-time processing, serving and machine learning are bringing incremental improvements of 10x and even more. Concurrent SessionsDriving Change at ScaleFir BallroomThe previous session, Future Ready, discussed why this is the Age of Acceleration and how technology will impact our IT organizations in the years ahead. The game-changers are clear: cloud, automation, virtual reality, cybercrime, grey tsunami, citizen expectations, digital divide, etc. Will they beget opportunities or breaking points? It’s all in the preparation. This interactive session furthers the discussion about how and why our IT organizations must evolve to meet – and embrace – the challenges ahead. Jason Koenders, Network Consultant, Ciena Lewis McMurran, Co-Manager, Future of Work Task Force, Workforce Training and Education Coordinating Board, State of Washington Public Records, Private RisksState RoomOur democracy was built on the premise that the business of government must be public. Governments have done a pretty good job of it historically, but the digital age has put old standards on shaky ground. Laws and policies are still on the books that relied on the “firewall of inconvenience” because it was so laborious to dig up private information. But now, technology makes it easy. Governments store far more personally identifiable information than any other entity, and the risk of exposure is growing exponentially. This session brings to light some serious questions that must be answered - and soon. Moderator: Will Saunders, Acting Chief Privacy Officer, Washington Technology Solutions, State of Washington Nancy Krier, Assistant Attorney General for Open Government, Office of the Attorney General, State of Washington Sean Krier, City Clerk, City of Olympia Michael Marty, Chief Information Officer, Office of the State Auditor, State of Washington Future of Identity ManagementRainier RoomOn one side there's open government, shared services, single sign-on and demand for easy access. On the other side there's security, access restriction and identity management. It can turn into quite a stalemate. But there's still hope that both sides can emerge victorious. This session looks at strategies, tactics and technologies that make it feasible to control access in an increasingly open environment. Sami Laine, Director of Technology Strategy, Okta Audrey Leckner, Secure Gateway Services Manager, Computing Services Division, Washington Technology Solutions Sponsor BriefingOlympic Room(Industry sponsors only) This informal discussion is hosted by the Director and State Chief Information Officer James Weaver. The focus will be on strategies, priorities, opportunities and the procurement process. |

Featured SpeakerFir BallroomThe Ethical Implications of Black Mirror: Why We Need AI TransparencyArtificial Intelligence (AI) technology has the power to amplify human ingenuity, extending our capabilities to help solve the biggest business and global challenges. When made accessible to everyone, AI will transform industries, make us more productive and help us enrich the customer and citizen experience. As technology increasingly becomes part of the products and services people use at work and at home every day, the power of AI technology must be balanced with a responsible approach, applying ethics to address societal impacts and build trust. In this talk we will explore episodes from the popular Netflix show Black Mirror and how Design Thinking can be used to ensure that the very worst (as evidenced in the show) does not come to pass.
