Concurrent SessionsThe Importance of a Risk AssessmentAmphitheaterThe cyber landscape is constantly shifting, and some strategies and safeguards that were secure just a year or two ago don’t cut it anymore. But the good news is that a properly done risk assessment can quite accurately identify vulnerabilities and priorities. And it helps an organization get smarter about the information it must protect. This session takes a close look at what constitutes a valid assessment and what you stand to gain. Moderator: Nadav Benbarak, Group Marketing Manager, Public Sector Solutions, Okta Sean P. McHenry, MCSE, CISA, IT Security Analyst, Department of Technology Services, State of Utah Harley D. Rinerson, Cyber Security Advisor, U.S. Department of Homeland Security Dan Seurer, Principal Sales Consultant, Oracle America, Inc. Data Sharing – How to Make It Pay OffFt. DouglasPressure is intensifying on government organizations to share information with other agencies and jurisdictions. But one must choose one’s battles. First and foremost, establish whether your data-sharing initiative will solve real-life problems, otherwise it’s just wasted effort. This session looks at some ringing successes and fruitful approaches. Drew Mingl, State Data Coordinator, Department of Technology Services, State of Utah Michael Rice, Director of Operations, Utah Interactive Wu Xu, Director, Center for Health Data and Informatics, Department of Health, State of Utah How to Make a Winning Budget RequestConnorIf it’s not just “luck of the draw”, what does success depend on when asking for money? In a word: credibility. So how does one becomes credible? By clearly, accurately and consistently stating “what it is”, “how much”, “how long” and, most important, “what’s the payoff”. In other words, you need to create a value proposition that is meaningful and perhaps even profound. There’s no lack of competition out there fighting for funding, but you can beat the odds if you approach it right. This session takes a vigorous look at how to tilt the process in your favor. Sophia DiCaro, Chief Compliance Officer, The Cynosure Group Laura Hunter, Chief Operating Officer, Utah Education and Telehealth Network Everyone Loves Maps!Willow Room (4th Floor)Two centuries ago, a massive project was undertaken to map the subcontinent of India. It took 40 years. The same project could now be done in mere seconds. Today, with satellite imagery, plentiful geospatial datasets, and a veritable explosion of location-aware devices, it’s possible to find just about anything, anytime, almost anywhere on earth. The potential impact on government services and analyses is unlimited, as are opportunities for fruitful collaboration. This session takes a look at trends, technologies and possibilities. General Session – Innovate!Bonneville BallroomAs technology drives on and continues to transform society in countless ways, we each have the choice to lead, follow or risk getting run over. Option number one is definitely the most rewarding. It’s not always easy to embrace the process of reinvention, but is there really any other choice in the long run? This session looks at some novel approaches for inspiring and engaging employees, stakeholders, businesses and citizens to think outside the box, safely venture beyond comfort zones and try some things that might never have been done before. Moderator: Kimberly Venable, Senior Associate, Strategic Initiatives, Sorenson Impact Dave Fletcher, Chief Technology Officer, State of Utah Luke Peterson, Director, Office of New Urban Mechanics, Utah Valley University Dr. Chris Wasden, Executive Director, Sorenson Center for Discovery and Innovation, David Eccles School of Business, University of Utah |

Concurrent SessionsInternet of Things and Its Emerging Impact on GovernmentAmphitheaterThe IoT basically consists of anything that can be connected wirelessly. On the government side, the applications usually boil down to one thing: data. What’s daunting going forward is the sheer amount of data that will be collected and the challenges and headaches that come with it. This session explores what’s on the horizon, how to cope with what’s coming, and most importantly, how to secure it all. Patrick Caustrita, Manager of IoT Business Development and Strategic Planning, Verizon Donna Milakovic, Director (Orem Satellite Office), Utah Science Technology and Research (USTAR), State of Utah Charles (Chip) Swisher, Director of Business Development, Practice Development and Delivery, CenturyLink Transforming Citizen EngagementFt. DouglasImproving constituent services starts with transforming the way you interact with them. Touchpoints like applying for benefits or processing service requests are typically manual and time consuming – frustrating for the constituent and costly for the government agency – making them ripe for digital transformation. This session takes a look at which technologies can help digitize government services for improved citizen satisfaction, better operational efficiency, and reduced cost. Ryan Bazler, Director, Product Marketing, Kofax, Inc. (@bazler6) Trevor Hebditch, Associate Director - Enterprise Architect, Information Services, Salt Lake County Government Center Data Rich, Results Poor?ConnorGovernment by nature is in the data collection business, and there is no shortage of information from which to extract actionable insights. The challenge for agencies is to reinvent how they leverage the vast amounts of information they already collect. Groundbreaking success requires stepping outside the box, adopting new mindsets, and embracing new tools and approaches. This session focuses on how to make analytics pay off big in your organization. Fast Track SessionsBonneville BallroomThe Power of the Digital CitizenTechnology is transforming society in fundamental ways as new generations grow up using digital devices before they can walk or talk. This puts pressure on government agencies to keep up with the times and – better yet – stay ahead of the curve for a population that is increasingly digitally engaged. This session looks at why government should use a citizen-centric approach to make government services more accessible and efficient for everyone. Dani Sloan, Instructional Technology Trainer, Professional Development, Utah Education Network (@daniksloan) Drones and GovernmentRarely has a technology had such potential benefits while at the same time generating such controversy. Drones are being used to enhance government services, but do the benefits outweigh the potential threats that they pose to safety and privacy? This session discusses the issues, successes and opportunities raised by what is sure to be a game-changing technology in government. Dr. Mac McKee, Director, Utah Water Research Laboratory, Utah State University (@MacTheKnyphe) Driverless Cars and Our FutureAutonomous vehicles are not just a fascinating – and controversial – topic of discussion but they offer a thought-provoking exercise in visualizing the potential ramifications of highly disruptive technologies. The impact of driverless cars will be revolutionary on our culture, economy, legal system, highway system, safety, commuting and more. This session takes a look at what could soon be a fundamental shift in our society. Blaine Leonard, Technology & Innovation Engineer, Department of Transportation, State of Utah |
