The Safe & Connected Communities Forum will bring together 30-50 federal, state and local leaders from multiple disciplines and jurisdictions into one room for strategic discussions on new technologies and the related policies that impact public safety and emergency management organizations. The event will be a series of facilitated discussions that will be co-led by Emergency Management magazine and members of the audience who will help set the stage for a broader discussion. This will be an intimate gathering and we expect a high level of interaction amongst the attendees given the format. The forum will be a great opportunity to see what others are both thinking and doing.
In today’s world, data is coming from a myriad of sources in both structured and unstructured fashions. Even the various incident reports have valuable information if one could make use of them in a more holistic fashion. This discussion will begin with local examples of how data is been used and will help advise on new approaches and technologies that can help clear up the clutter and provide actionable information.
Communication systems are at the heart of public safety organizations and will continue to play a vital role in dispatch, incident management and citizen reporting. FirstNet, next generation 911, regional broadband initiatives and other projects are all underway nationally and it can be difficult to maintain existing systems that are outdated during this transition. This session will focus on what some organizations are doing to modernize their communication systems and what they have learned along the way.
Speakers:
Bob Desiato, Director, AT&T Disaster Recovery
George Scherb, Chief, Allendale Police Department
Body cameras, fixed and mobile video networks, and even smart-phone video have been slowly but surely making their way into the public safety arena. However, the mass adoption of body camera technology is creating problems for organizations as they wrestle with policies, implementation, storage/retrieval and on-going maintenance of this technology. So far, there are not a lot of best practices being highlighted at the federal level so we hope this session can help organizations gain some insight and learn what is working and what is not in what has become a tsunami of investment.
Speaker:
Dan Fagan, Manager – Strategic Markets, CDW-G
Like it or not, new technologies like drones, robotics and driverless vehicles are becoming part of the landscape that public safety organizations need to navigate. The FAA has begun to make recommendations regarding drones and many jurisdictions at the state and local level are following suit. Similar policy discussions are occurring around driverless vehicles and other new technologies. This session will be an opportunity to hear what others are doing, catch up on any new legislation that needs to be followed and otherwise discuss how these technologies will impact public safety organizations.
