Public CIO Technology Summit 2018 Banner

Overview

The Public CIO Technology Summit is an invitation-only educational event that brings together a select group of CIOs, CTOs and other technology leaders from the largest city, county, and state IT organizations around the country. Participants gather for a day and a half of interactive dialogue around our Public CIO Special Report topics and other top-of-mind operational issues. The event’s collaborative format provides an opportunity to learn from your peers and exchange ideas on key areas of technology, management, policy, and strategy unique to large government information technology organizations.

This summer’s event will be held in Jackson, Wyoming. Jackson is a uniquely located at the foot of the Grand Tetons and as is a gateway to both Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. We’ve planned the event travel day to Jackson for a Monday so interested attendees can include one or two days over the weekend to enjoy one of the most spectacular parts of our country.

Topics will include:

  • AI – Myths and Realities
  • Enterprise Data
  • Solving Identity Management
  • To Cloud or Not to Cloud…
  • The Role of Technology in a Resilient Government
  • Security from the Edge to the Middle – A Discussion of Priorities
  • IoT – What Have We Learned?

AI – Myths and Realities

There’s a lot of hype around machine learning and advanced analytics techniques. Many of these technologies have been around for years but are just becoming mainstream today. Still, it all seems so new and overwhelming. How do you know what’s real and what’s hype? What is needed to make these technologies useful and relevant to the real problems government organizations need to solve today? This discussion will delve into this world and provide examples of how artificial intelligence can be applied in ways that makes sense.

Data-Centric Architecture to Enable Government Transformation

There is a clear need to re-visit data center design to better reflect anticipated tools and applications. Currently, most architecture is developed over time, project by project and has a myriad of loosely coupled platforms that allow for production systems, application development, backup/DR and other key components, to be managed. There is a case to be made that tomorrow’s architecture will be centered around a broadly-shared set of data services, which enable data to be freely shared by traditional and new web scale applications. What does this mean for current data centers? What will be the building blocks for a data-centric architecture? Are there examples of where this is being done? How would you get to this new architecture in an environment that has a variety of funding sources that don’t line up in any sensible way? We will start out with the vision and depend on you, the data center owners, to discuss the relevance and practicality of this vision.

To Cloud or Not to Cloud…

Cloud computing is part and parcel with government IT, but what’s really going on? How fluid is your strategy? Do things need to move back and forth? Are your policies and practices around data privacy and security in this hybrid world strong enough and truly followed throughout the enterprise? What else is needed? What are your peers doing? Some organizations are all in and some are barely testing the waters. Why is this? This session will shed some light on what organizations are really doing with the cloud and what the future looks like.

Big Data Case Study in Urban Accessibility and Smart Mobility

What happens when a data analytics firm, a nonprofit agency, a university, two mobility providers, and a planning commission get together to fight hunger in Central Ohio? Find out how this unlikely coalition is using big data to uncover challenges and pilot new approaches to helping families in need access available food resources. How can new mobility options make cities work better for citizens and services providers alike? How are new big data sources changing our understanding of and approach to the greatest needs? Data analytics is increasingly a part of answering these questions and more, while also providing options for innovative, smart, and more sustainable transportation solutions.

The Role of Technology in a Resilient Government

As we have seen in Puerto Rico and in Sonoma, California, government in the face of a major disaster is not as resilient as we would like. What strategies must one consider? The data center may have a secondary site but is that enough? As we deploy more mobile technology and devices that sit at the edge in a wired and wireless environment, just how resilient are we? How resilient do we need to be? The idea of resiliency continues to evolve as the scale of disasters mounts and as the use of technology increases. At this point in history, planning will be important as will heeding the lessons learned from what others have experienced.

Solving Identity Management

Most government organizations are dealing with the reality of multiple systems that citizens, residents and business owners use to identify themselves for everyday transactions. The reasons why are well known. How to eliminate this issue is not nearly as obvious. In this session, we will feature one organization that has made single identity both a mission and a passion. This organization is a model for others to follow, but they themselves are also only part of the way to the finish line!

IoT – What Have We Learned?

The Internet of Things (IoT) is transforming the “built” world with new sensors, management tools and operational efficiencies that we have all talked about since the advent of computing (and even in the Jules Vernes novels of a century ago). As computing moves to the new edge, what have we learned? What is different about these devices? What can we expect in the near future? How can this be governed so security and standards are maintained? All of the answers are not known, of course, but let’s see where we are and where some of the more prolific users are headed!
