A message from our Keynote Speaker

One of the biggest challenges we have in government is getting everyone rowing in the same direction. It goes beyond innovation and change management. It’s about getting the most out of our people, our business partners, and improving our business processes to better serve the citizens and businesses in Ohio. The CIO Academy is our opportunity to improve our leadership skills, hone our management techniques and craft a shared vision of how we, as Ohio’s IT leaders, can work together to apply technology’s limitless potential to meaningful business solutions. I hope you can join us for this unique event.

Clay Jenkinson, Writer, Historical Performer and Theodore Roosevelt Humanities Scholar

Theodore Roosevelt was an American statesman, author, explorer, soldier, naturalist, and reformer who served as the 26th President of the United States from 1901 to 1909. Widely regarded as the most dynamic president in history, his life story is nothing short of remarkable. Born frail and sickly, Roosevelt transformed himself into a rugged man of adventure by sheer force of will. He was also a serious intellectual who frequently read a book a day and authored 35 books and 150,000 letters. He was arguably the best prepared president in American history. But few realize that he was also the first “high-tech” president as he brought the American people, sometimes kicking and screaming, into the twentieth century. Clay Jenkinson brings Teddy to life with such authenticity that viewers may forget that he is not actually standing in front of them. The audience will have the opportunity to ask Mr. Roosevelt questions on any subject, an experience that gives a new appreciation of history and a president who was truly larger than life. Prepare to be inspired!

General Session – Multiple Paths to Being a CIO (or Not)

Hayes Ballroom D/E

Think for a moment about the CIOs you’ve known. Did any two of them share the exact same career path? Probably not. There’s no set route to becoming a CIO because the job involves an eclectic array of ever-changing skills and responsibilities. And let’s face it, the job isn’t for everyone. It’s one-part cheerleader, one part counselor, one part firefighter and one part administrator. Technology fits in there somewhere, too. But there’s something mighty rewarding about the job, otherwise no one would do it. Is it for you? If so, how do you get there? Or if you’re already there, how do you keep going? Let’s hear from a panel of veteran CIOs who have “been there done that got a bunch of t-shirts” and are still alive to tell the tale.

General Session – It All Comes Down to Relationships

Hayes Ballroom D/E

In the old days, IT was a back office activity, working under the radar in relative peace. Oh, how times have changed. IT is now front and center in virtually everything that government does. Success – and survival – depends on being adept at winning friends and influencing people. Not just your immediate colleagues, but upper leadership, budget directors, legislators, service providers and peers in other agencies and jurisdictions. This session dives into the vital subject of communication and why it must be the cornerstone of your role as an IT executive.

General Session – Build an “A Team” – You’ll Need One!

Hayes Ballroom D/E

CIOs have long been proficient at building teams of IT specialists. But the nature of IT is evolving fast. Today’s needs – and certainly tomorrow’s – call for a new type of team where versatility and resourcefulness are the most prized traits, with team members who can be assigned to seemingly impossible missions, able to snatch victory from defeat. In other words… an “A Team”! This session explores the skills and characteristics to look for, how to cultivate them and how to select the right people for the right job.

Moderator: Ervan Rodgers II, Chief Information Officer, Office of Attorney General, State of Ohio

Nathan Huskey, Chief Information Officer, Department of Health, State of Ohio

The “Vision Track”

Hayes Ballroom D/E

Strategic Visioning – Rowing in the Same Direction

Your staff and colleagues might all be in the same boat in theory, but do they really know where they’re going? That’s why a clearly expressed vision is critical. Is there one for your team? How do you communicate it, and to whom? Do you empower others to achieve it? Is everyone really on board? If not, why not? This session discusses how to keep your team on course during the long voyage ahead.

Jim Walsh, Information Technology Systems Director, Court of Common Pleas, Lake County

Scott Brock, Chief Information Officer, Development Services Agency, State of Ohio

Aligning Expectations and Metrics with a Vision

Once a vision has been declared, how do you actually achieve what you’re setting out to do? It’s an old cliché, but there’s plenty of truth to it: “If you can measure it, you can manage it.” The use of metrics has the added benefit of “keeping it real” regarding expectations and performance. This session focuses on how to speed momentum, boost motivation, demonstrate progress and ensure that accountability resides in all the right places.

Randy Cole, Executive Director, Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission

Risk Management and Turning a Vision into Reality

Somewhere there is a crisis waiting to happen, and it can derail your progress despite the best of intentions. But you can improve your odds considerably. The first step is understanding how to identify and manage risk. Much can be gleaned from debacles and near-misses in the public sector. This session takes a no-nonsense look at how, why and where governments can go wrong.
