Government Technology’s passion is helping spread best practices and spurring innovation in the public sector. The Ohio Digital Government Summit is designed to do just that. The summit has an advisory board that gathers public sector and private sector leaders to create an agenda designed to make that passion relevant and actionable to the state and local government organizations attending the summit. Participants tell us they use the inspirational keynotes, leadership discussions, networking breaks, and timely topics discussed in the numerous breakout sessions to help advance the goals of their organizations and their own career paths.

Keynote – Off Balance on PurposeArchie M. Griffin Grand Ballroom EastDan Thurmon, Author and Peak Performance Coach (Back by popular demand!) Life is an off-balance proposition. Achieving balance – a perfect symmetry – is an unrealistic objective. You will never get there! Life is in constant motion, and priorities and resources change all the time. That’s why we need to embrace and initiate off balance moments in order to successfully engage life in all its aspects. In this dynamic keynote address, Dan Thurmon uses highly visual and creative means to demonstrate that “off balance” is how we learn, grow, excel and fully experience what is happening around us. It’s tough out there right now. The question is: Are you thrown off balance in response to your world or are you off balance on purpose? |

Concurrent SessionsCloud Chasing – a Sensible ApproachGreat Hall Meeting Room 1/2 (Ground Floor)The paradigm has already shifted, and every organization has ventured into the cloud in one way or another. Some attempts have been more successful than others; some models have proven more viable than others; and, some procurement approaches have fared better than others. This session focuses on lessons learned, where the industry is headed and how to position your organization for best success. Brian Kelley, Chief Technology Officer, Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission (@profbkelley) Dan Schneider, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, PCMG Optimizing the Workforce and Workplace of TomorrowCartoon Room 1 (3rd Floor)For years, government has widely reported the onset of the “silver tsunami.” The looming retirement wave is driving the need to accelerate innovative recruitment and retention practices in government at all levels, particularly in IT. Questions about mobility, flexibility, collaboration tools and collaborative spaces are becoming common during the interview process. Yet government is not always prepared to offer competitive answers in today’s legacy environment. This session offers a look at what some innovative organizations are doing to scrap outmoded practices, address modernization and embrace new paradigms. Ken Mancuso, Manager, Application Solutions, AT&T Scot Rourke, Chief Information and Transformation Officer, Cuyahoga County The Keys to Creating and Consuming Shared ServicesCartoon Room 2 (3rd Floor)Pressure is intensifying on government organizations to share data, apps, infrastructure and resources with other agencies and jurisdictions. It hasn’t been easy, but traditional barriers are breaking down and opportunities have never been greater. This session provides insights and lessons learned on how to collaborate and build sustainable shared service models that are win-win for all involved. Randy Cole, Executive Director, Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission (@OHTurnpikeguy) Tim Lonsway, Managing Director Government and Education, CBTS (@timlonsway) Josh Sandstrom, Managing Director - Strategy and Innovation, Health & Public Service, Accenture (@JoshSandstrom) Project Management: What’s the Formula for Success?Senate Chamber (2nd Floor)Project management has changed over the past few decades. Our consumer-centric society has pushed the pace of development and response, leading to far shorter windows and putting a strain on traditional methodologies. Results have been mixed, and the national press has had a field day with some spectacular failures. But there are plenty of successful projects and they are successful for good reasons. This session discusses the factors that can sink a project or bring it safely to port. Shadya Y. Yazback, Chief of Enterprise Services, Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation |

Featured Speaker – CyberstrikeArchie M. Griffin Grand Ballroom EastMorgan Wright, Author and Cybersecurity Expert Scenario: The Russian Federation launches coordinated cyberattacks against the Ukraine, taking out large numbers of power plants, crippling water systems and disrupting communications. Massive civil unrest taxes first responders and public services beyond the breaking point. Double agents occupy key infrastructure positions. It is the culmination of a two-year espionage operation and the Russian Federation seizes the country without a shot being fired. How did this happen? A printer cartridge, falsified work histories and routine social engineering. In this riveting session, Morgan walks us through the future of warfare, the critical role of cybersecurity, the importance of properly vetting employees and why traditional network security is failing. |

Concurrent SessionsNavigating the Cyber Landscape in Your Own OrganizationGreat Hall Meeting Room 1/2 (Ground Floor)The previous presentation “Cyberstrike” painted a formidable panorama of the global cyber landscape. But what does that mean for you and your organization? This interactive session continues the discussion by exploring the tools, technologies and tactics that can pave the road to success in your enterprise. Russ Forsythe, Chief Information Security Officer, Office of Information Technology, Ohio Department of Administrative Services Brian Kelley, Chief Technology Officer, Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission Sean Telles, Manager of Systems Engineering, ForeScout Technologies, Inc. Why Aren’t There More Women in Technology?Cartoon Room 1 (3rd Floor)This session is NOT for women only! It’s a discussion that is relevant – and even critical – to everyone in IT at every level. It’s not just about women but about workforce diversity in general. It’s long past the time to drop IT stereotypes and preconceptions. IT organizations need every capable candidate they can find. This lively session is sure to be both thought-provoking, eye-opening and encouraging. Moderator: Ingrid Fields, Strategic Solutions Director, Software Defined Enterprise, VMware Tom Croyle, Chief Technology Officer, DAS Office of Information Technology, State of Ohio Emily B. McNeeley, IT General Counsel & Director of Special Initiatives, Cuyahoga County Department of Information Technology Sowjanya Valluri, Chief Information Officer, Office of Budget and Management, State of Ohio Self-service Government – Let’s Shorten the RunwayCartoon Room 2 (3rd Floor)It’s a highly interactive and fast-paced society, and people are getting more demanding about, well, everything. The pressure is mounting on government services, too, and a top priority is to make sure that “citizen-centric” is more than just a buzzword. The smartest way to do this is to place the controls in the hands of the customers whenever possible. This session discusses ways to speed the process through creative strategies that make services more convenient, accurate and efficient. Derek Bridges, DAS Office of Information Technology, State of Ohio Sean Brophy, Regional Vice President, Public Sector, Tableau Tamara Dukes, Vice President, Business Development, NIC Practical Continuity: Never Let a Good Disaster Go to WasteSenate Chamber (2nd Floor)Somewhere nearby is a crisis or disaster waiting to happen. It might be nature’s wrath or a cyberattack or a sudden social upheaval. Whatever it may be, decisions must be made at lightning speed to save lives, time and reputations. This is possible only to the degree that infrastructure and networks (both physical and inter-personal) are keeping people connected no matter what the circumstances. This session looks at how to keep functioning in the worst conditions. Keynote – How to Be Successful During Times of ChangeArchie M. Griffin Grand Ballroom EastH. James Dallas, Author, Speaker, Consultant, Change Agent Change is rampant within and across all industries and society as a whole, driven in no small part by Information Technology. The increasing pace and degree of change are causing many people to struggle and, unfortunately, get left behind. This is particularly challenging to those who are tasked with leadership and team-building (and in this day and age, who isn’t?). This session will identify how change and culture are intertwined; why people fail during times of change; and what you must know and do to not only succeed but also thrive. |

General Session – Design Thinking in ActionArchie M. Griffin Grand Ballroom EastA design-a-thon is basically a hackathon for designers. The downside to hackathons is that they too often end up as solutions in search of problems. The key is to tackle actual challenges by examining the entire landscape for the best potential of measurable data-driven outcomes. Hence the increasing popularity of holding a design-a-thon to lay the foundation for a meaningful hackathon. And that is exactly what has been happening during the first day of this conference. A group of key stakeholders have been locked in a room working on one of the most important topics of our time: smart transit. It’s at the heart of the Smart Cities movement and it is going to revolutionize our communities. Now the results will be revealed in this lively session that will leave you eager to hold your own design-a-thons to solve your organizational challenges. Warning: It’s addictive!
