Governor Eric Greitens, State of Missouri

Governor Eric Greitens, State of Missouri

Eric was born and raised in Missouri. His mom, Becky, was an early childhood special education teacher, and his dad, Rob, worked for the Department of Agriculture. He grew up with two younger brothers, Marc and Aaron. Eric attended Missouri public schools, where he played baseball and soccer and got his first job while he was in elementary school. In 1992, he graduated from Parkway North High School in St. Louis.
Eric earned a scholarship to Duke University, where he took up boxing. In college, he also participated in humanitarian missions overseas, working with refugee and orphan children in Croatia and Bosnia, with Rwandan children and families who survived the genocide, and with children of the street in Bolivia.
Eric earned a Rhodes scholarship to Oxford University. He continued to work overseas with children and families in hardship, including in one of Mother Teresa’s homes for the destitute and dying in India and at an orphanage in Albania. He studied how leaders and communities can come together to help children and families in situations of extreme hardship, poverty, and war. At Oxford, Eric also became a champion boxer.
Both of Eric’s grandfathers served in the military in World War II. Inspired by them, and with a desire to serve his country, Eric joined the United States Navy on January 20, 2001. After graduating from Officer Candidate School, Eric received orders to Basic Underwater Demolition/ SEAL Training (BUD/S), and reported for duty. He graduated with BUD/S class 237.
Eric served as a U.S. Navy SEAL on four deployments: in Afghanistan with a counterterrorism US Special Operations Special Mission Unit, as the commander of a Mark V Special Operations Craft Detachment in Southeast Asia, and as the commander of Naval Special Warfare Task Unit Manda Bay in the Horn of Africa. In 2005-06, he served as a White House Fellow under President George W. Bush, and in 2006, he deployed to Iraq for his fourth tour of duty, as the commander of an al-Qaeda targeting cell in Fallujah.
After his unit was hit by a suicide truck bomb, Eric returned home and founded The Mission Continues, which helps America’s veterans live lives of purpose, productivity, dignity and meaning here at home. In seven years as CEO, Eric built The Mission Continues into a nationally recognized veterans organization and won numerous awards for his service and leadership.
In 2011, Eric married his wife, Sheena. Today, they are the proud parents of two boys, Joshua and Jacob. Throughout his life, Eric Greitens has served and fought for others. As Missouri’s 56th Governor, Eric is on a new mission: to change politics as usual and fight for more jobs, higher pay, safer streets, and better schools for all Missourians.

Cloud Governance

Lincoln Banquet Room

Today, it’s tough to find an organization that doesn’t depend on the cloud for something critical. The question is no longer whether to venture into the cloud, yes or no. Now it’s a matter of “How, what, when and where?” Understanding and anticipating risks, limitations, scope and accountability are critical to success. This session explores the factors to consider before going “all in” (or even partway).

Optimizing the Workforce and Workplace of Tomorrow

Jefferson Room B/C

State and local government organizations are increasingly challenged to attract and retain IT staff. Retirement, private sector competition, changing technology portfolios and evolving workplace expectations are beginning to stack up against traditional government workplace practices. Questions about mobility, collaboration spaces and tools are becoming common during the interview process and government is not always prepared to offer competitive answers in today’s fluid and highly-competitive job market. This session offers a look at what some innovative organizations are doing to scrap outmoded practices and embrace new paradigms.

James Carlson, Senior Lead Product Manager, Business Channel Marketing, CenturyLink

365 Days of Sunshine

Jefferson Room A

Open government isn’t just a trend – it’s the future. To quote Star Trek: Resistance is futile! There are just too many tangible benefits and too many political pressures to ignore. But document management and simply making data available aren’t the biggest challenges; it’s deciding where to draw the line in this age of social media, Internet of Things, and a surfeit of personally identifiable information. This session discusses the pitfalls to avoid and key factors in deciding just how much sunshine you can bear without being burned.

General Session – Cybersecurity: Then and Now

Missouri/Capital/Truman Room

In the world of cyber security, five years can be a lifetime. The landscape is evolving far too fast, and what worked just a few years ago probably won’t work today. On the other hand, some things never seem to change, such as the answer to the question “Are we secure yet?” In this session, an expert panel bravely reflects on just how far we’ve come and how far we still need to go. Be prepared to laugh, to cry, and to face some surprising realities.

We live in a highly interactive and fast-paced society, and people are getting more demanding about, well, everything. The pressure is mounting on government services, too, and one of the Governor’s top priorities is to make “citizen-centric” more than just a buzzword. This session takes a look at some creative strategies to remake government’s relationship with its customers into something more stimulating, rewarding and efficient.

Artificial Intelligence and Big Data

What happens when Big Data gets too big to be useful? There is a limit to how much humans can analyze by using traditional software and analytics. This session takes a look at an inventive application of AI that is making a real impact on people’s lives.
