Bits and Bytes – A Community College’s Rise from CyberattackJackson Ballroom I/IIIn April 2022, Pearl River Community College was the victim of a cyberattack. Although students did not miss any class time, the recovery operations and continued security improvements took over a year. Throughout the process of recovery and restoration, Pearl River Community College learned invaluable lessons on system evaluation, process changes, cross-organizational interactions, and communications. While much of the focus around an attack like this is “what happened,” the real story lives in “what did you do about it.” This session will walk you through the early recovery steps, the long-range goals of rebuilding an enterprise system, and the dynamic landscape of a system in recovery. Information will be presented from the lens of a lived experience and focus on what worked, what was learned, what unexpected issues arose during restoration and what solutions should be considered.
