Overview

Cyber-attacks have increased dramatically in recent years. The 2nd Annual Michigan High School Cyber Summit provides an opportunity for young people to learn about the latest efforts to defend against cyber criminals in both the public and private sector. This event also creates an opportunity to showcase the variety of career opportunities available in cybersecurity and outline the path to secure those jobs.

Bryan Seely

Bryan Seely

World Famous Cyber Security Expert, Ethical Hacker, Author, Former U.S. Marine

Bryan Seely is a world-famous hacker, cybersecurity expert, author, international keynote speaker and former U.S. Marine. Seely became one of the most famous hackers in 2014 when he became the only person to ever wiretap the United States Secret Service and FBI. Shockingly he told the 2 agencies before he was caught, and instead of being sent to maximum security prison, the Secret Service called him a hero and praised his courage and integrity.
He has appeared in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Washington as well as television appearances on Closing bell on CNBC, CNN, FOX News, ABC, NBC and TMZ with Harvey Levin. Bryan is passionate about fighting for consumers rights, privacy and educating the public about how to stay safe in a constantly changing technology landscape.
Bryan also co-founded the Blackhat MEA Hacking conference in Riyadh in 2021, and currently lives in Seattle where he is a full-time single parent of 2.

Dantae Barden

Manager of the Vulnerability Management and Security Operations Teams, DTMB Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection Division, State of Michigan

In his role Dantae leads two fantastic, talented teams to ensure the security posture at the state is continuously monitored and the security tools are properly engineered and running stable.
Dantae has over 20 years in cybersecurity and has focused heavily on providing secure environments for companies and government organizations by implementing best practices and providing visibility on vulnerabilities and misconfigurations.
Dantae is an ethical hacker and enjoys in his spare time to read and watch videos on new tactics, techniques and procedures to keep his skills sharp.
Dantae’s favorite part of working in Cybersecurity at DTMB is educating customers on their security posture and how they can work together with our teams to be able to ensure the safety and security of state assets and data.

Jayson Cavendish

Jayson Cavendish

Deputy Chief Security Officer, Department of Technology, Management & Budget, State of Michigan

Jayson Cavendish is the Deputy Chief Security Officer for DTMB's Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection.
Jayson brings a unique blend of strengths to the role, including leadership, vision, and strategic planning, along with the ability to promote collaboration at all levels to support critical, high-level statewide projects to successful completion. As part of DTMB's leadership team, Jayson has helped to formulate and implement policies, strategic plans, directives, and organizational structure. Jayson leads several Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection committees, as well as programs at the local and state level.
Jayson has three years of experience in state government and has steadily built his in-depth IT/security architecture knowledge while serving in various leadership positions his career including Information Security Management roles, Director of Technical Services, and Data Warehouse Manager/Architect roles. In addition, he has numerous certifications including CISSP, CISA, PMP and is a Licensed Professional Investigator in Michigan.
He is a graduate of Northwood University and Campbell University and holds a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and Management and an associate degree in accounting.

Laura Clark

Laura Clark

Chief Information Officer & Chief Security Officer, Department of Technology, Management & Budget, State of Michigan

Laura Clark serves as the chief information officer (CIO) for the State of Michigan, directing the state’s technology and security efforts. As deputy director for the Michigan Department of Technology, Management & Budget (DTMB), she also oversees operations for the department, which provides information technology, business, and administrative services to state employees and stakeholders, as well as Michigan residents, visitors, and businesses.
During her 20-year career in public service, Clark has embraced a hands-on, adaptable approach to leadership. Since being appointed as CIO by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, she has helped the State of Michigan achieve success through many initiatives, such as the launch of the award-winning Michigan Secure mobile app and successfully securing $20 million in critical cybersecurity funding from the Michigan Legislature for statewide security enhancements.
In her day-to-day work, Clark values the contributions of every person on DTMB’s 5,000 member team and has the unique ability to connect her sense of purpose and service with the overall work and mission of directing the State of Michigan’s technology and security efforts. She leads by example, seeking out opportunities that will allow those around her to succeed. Throughout these efforts, Clark’s compassion, patience, experience, and skills as are helping DTMB and the entire state forge a successful path into the digital future.

Justin Hutchens or “Hutch” is an Innovation Principal at Trace3 and an expert in cybersecurity, risk management, and AI. He is the author of the book “The Language of Deception: Weaponizing Next Generation AI” and co-hosts The Cyber Cognition Podcast. He is also a U.S. Air Force veteran, has a master’s degree in information systems, and routinely speaks at seminars, universities, and global tech conferences.

Justin Palacios is a Specialist Leader within Deloitte Risk & Financial Advisory, bringing over 20 years of service and experience within the Department of Defense and the Intelligence community. He is an experienced and innovative professional in the field of cybersecurity, with extensive knowledge in end-to-end IT systems security, incident response, cyber hunt and investigations, and cyber threat intelligence. Currently, Justin leads Deloitte’s Dynamic Adversary Intelligence Team, where he conducts daily technical analytics of Net-flow data records to identify malware, advanced persistent threats, and other malicious or anomalous activities in support of adversarial pursuits.

Ryan has successfully led security practices, demonstrating a strong track record in organizational leadership and technology change management. He is recognized as a cybersecurity leader, currently overseeing a team responsible for next-generation digital transformation services, including Cyber Security, Identity Solutions, and Application Security for North America.
With deep knowledge of CloudOps, DevSecOps, and integrated security requirements, Ryan blends technical proficiency with leadership acumen. His two decades of experience in technology transformation and digital innovation position him as a technically-savvy, results-driven leader, adept at managing complex solutions and implementations at scale.

Brian Pillar is a General Manager for the State of Michigan, Department of Technology, Management and Budget with his teams providing support to the Michigan Department of Corrections, the Michigan State Police and the Michigan Department of Military and Veterans Affairs. Brian’s core values are: the strength of the teams; customer service; Innovation; Security; and Business Value.
Brian is an alumnus of Michigan State University and began his professional career working for one of the university’s IT departments where he drove a major network operating system modernization project. He then pursued opportunities at a small, but global, software development company where he led the IT Operations teams in their journey to the public cloud. In 2018, Brian joined the Department of Technology, Management and Budget, accepting his present role in 2021. Since joining the State of Michigan, Brian has been passionate about driving modernization towards cloud friendly platforms and services.

Megan Schrauben

MiSTEM Executive Director, Labor and Economic Opportunity, State of Michigan

Megan Schrauben is the MiSTEM Executive Director for the State of Michigan which includes facilitating the activities of the Governor’s MiSTEM Advisory Council and managing state and federal dollars for STEM programming. The state office for MiSTEM is housed at the Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity (LEO) and coordinates efforts with the MI Department of Education (MDE). Megan holds a B.S. in physics and mathematics education from the University of Michigan and a Masters of Applied Science from Michigan Technological University. During her tenures at these institutions her passion for integrated STEM instruction grew out of research internships at CERN in Switzerland, Fermilab near Chicago, the NSCL at MSU, and a teaching/engineering position in Santa Cruz, Bolivia. Prior to coming to LEO, Megan taught high school physics and math in Jackson, MI, was Director of the Mathematics and Science Center in Jackson County where she also served as President of the MI Mathematics and Science Centers Network, then moved to the MDE where she was the Integrated Instruction Consultant and serves on the board for the Council of State Science Supervisors.
