Government Technology’s passion is helping spread best practices and spurring innovation in the public sector. The Michigan Digital Government Summit is designed to do just that. The summit has an advisory board that gathers public sector and private sector leaders to create an agenda designed to make that passion relevant and actionable to the state and local government organizations attending the summit. Participants tell us they use the inspirational keynotes, leadership discussions, networking breaks, and timely topics discussed in the numerous breakout sessions to help advance the goals of their organizations and their own career paths.
Topics Include:
We are celebrating the 15th year of Michigan’s premier IT event for public sector professionals. It’s the perfect place to collaborate and network with government peers and private industry partners. But even more important are the educational sessions that will provide us with valuable knowledge and insight that will help drive our future successes. Don’t miss this chance to think strategically and be a part of the conversation to create a better Michigan. I look forward to seeing you there!

Concurrent SessionsNavigating the Cyber LandscapeMeeting Room 201/202Government organizations of all sizes are under attack and the stakes have never been higher. Threats of all types are increasingly sophisticated and better organized. Spear phishing, ransomware and hacktivism are becoming full-fledged industries with remarkably low barriers to entry. This session looks at the elements necessary to predict, prepare for and defend against today’s most insidious threats. Rajiv Das, Chief Security Officer and Deputy Director, Department of Technology, Management and Budget, State of Michigan John Rush, Senior Solutions Engineer, Security Specialist, Ivanti/SHI Deb Fett, Chief Information Officer, Innovation & Technology, Ingham County Srinivas Mukkamala, CEO & Co-Founder, RiskSense (Representing CenturyLink/Ciena) Optimizing the Workforce and Workplace of TomorrowMeeting Room 203/204For years government has widely reported the onset of the “silver tsunami”. The looming retirement wave is driving the need to accelerate innovative recruitment and retention practices in government at all levels, particularly in IT. Questions about mobility, flexibility, collaboration tools and collaborative spaces are becoming common during the interview process and government is not always prepared to offer competitive answers in today’s legacy environment. This session offers a look at what some innovative organizations are doing to scrap outmoded practices, address modernization and embrace new paradigms. Phil Bertolini, Chief Information Officer, Deputy County Executive, Oakland County Ken Mancuso, Manager, Application Solutions, AT&T Dealing with the Data DelugeMeeting Room 101/102Big data, the Internet of Things, surveillance, video, et al., are pushing organizations to reinvent how they handle and leverage information. Unless the right foundation is in place, the vast potential of Big Analytics remains largely untapped. It’s all about data readiness, which hinges on adroit cataloging, storage, access and retrieval. This session looks at creative practices and strategies to cope with data challenges across the enterprise. Chris Christensen, Director of Infrastructure Protection, DTMB Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection, State of Michigan Muhammad Luqman, Senior Project Manager, PMP, CSM, RICOH Ashok Shenoy, Director, Application Dev Ops and Customer Support, mindSHIFT, a Ricoh Company John Stewart, Partner Executive K12 Education and SLG, mindSHIFT, a Ricoh Company Sean Telles, Manager of Systems Engineering, ForeScout Technologies Disruptive Technologies – Are You Ready?Meeting Room 103/104Technology is defining the way we live, work, play and govern. The adjective “disruptive” is probably an understatement when applied to trends such as autonomous vehicles, drones, artificial intelligence, ever-smarter devices, robotics and the Internet of Things. This session explores some of the technologies that are changing the face of society and – inevitably – government. Learn how to control the flow of information and communicate with the media, stakeholders, bosses, peers and other audiences during a crisis. |

Concurrent SessionsReinventing the Citizen ExperienceMeeting Room 201/202In this highly interactive and fast-paced society, people are getting more demanding about, well, everything. The pressure is mounting on government services, too, and one of the Governor’s top priorities is to make “citizen-centric” more than a buzzword. To one degree or another, each of us is expected to wear the hat of “Chief Customer Officer”. This session discusses innovative strategies to remake government’s relationship with its customers into something more stimulating and rewarding. Moderator: Suzanne Pauley, Director of eMichigan, Department of Technology, Management and Budget, State of Michigan Chris Black, Business Architect, IoT, CDW Shelley Mull, Director, Department of State, Office of Technology and Project Services, State of Michigan Christopher Neff, Vice President of Marketing, NIC Sensible, Smart and Secure CloudMeeting Room 203/204The paradigm has already shifted, and every organization has ventured into the cloud in one way or another. Some attempts have been more successful than others; some models have proven more viable than others; and some approaches have been more secure than others. This session focuses on lessons learned, where the industry is headed and how to position your organization for best success. Rodney Davenport, Chief Technology Officer, Department of Technology, Management and Budget, State of Michigan Jon Grewe, Senior Systems Engineer, VMware Jeff Stout, Sr. Enterprise Security Architect, Cloud Security, Akamai Compliance ChaosMeeting Room 103/104Compliance is a word that can strike fear in the hearts of otherwise valiant IT officials. At times, it’s akin to trying to grab hold of a school of fish without using a net. Courts, justice, tax records, HIPAA, payment processing, cybersecurity, and… who knows what else might be coming. This interactive session is a chance to assess the condition of the playing field and devise a game plan for ultimate victory (or at least steering clear of a blowout loss). Keynote - CyberstrikeBanquet 1 – 4Morgan Wright, Author and Cybersecurity Expert Scenario: The Russian Federation launches coordinated cyberattacks against the Ukraine, taking out large numbers of power plants, crippling water systems and disrupting communications. Massive civil unrest taxes first responders and public services beyond the breaking point. Double agents occupy key infrastructure positions. It is the culmination of a two-year espionage operation and the Russian Federation seizes the country without a shot being fired. How did this happen? A printer cartridge, falsified work histories and routine social engineering. In this riveting session, Morgan walks us through the future of warfare, the critical role of cybersecurity, the importance of properly vetting employees and why traditional network security is failing |

Fast Track SessionsBanquet 1 – 4Blockchain 101Blockchain is being called the next big transformational technology in government. What is blockchain? In a nutshell, it’s an incorruptible and transparent ledger of digital transactions. Examples include identity management, contract management, financial services, licensing, electronic voting and more. There is a lot to like. This session provides an introduction to this fast-emerging technology, why it is particularly suited to government applications and how to get started. Pete Teigen, IBM Global Government Center of Competence Blockchain SME, IBM CISO as a ServiceCan’t afford your own private CISO? You’re not the only one. When there’s a shortage of something, the best solution is to share. And that’s even more true of CISOs; there is far more demand than supply. Hence the option of “CISO as a Service” to help enable maximum benefits from minimal resources. In this session, you’ll learn about some creative approaches being used successfully in the state of Michigan. Moderator: John Kronick, Director Cybersecurity Solutions, PCM Security Services Andy Brush, Information Technology Manager, Washtenaw County Chris Burrows, Chief Information Security Officer, Oakland County Rajiv Das, Chief Security Officer, Department of Technology, Management and Budget, State of Michigan Deep Learning – A New Evolution in Artificial Intelligence? When will human intelligence be replicated by machines? It’s getting closer by the day. When it finally does happen, it might well be the most disruptive technology in the history of the human race. The science of artificial intelligence has had its fits and starts but there’s a new innovation: deep learning is a subset of machine learning that is inspired by our brains’ own neural networks, and it brings AI several steps closer to mimicking the human mind. This session offers an introduction to this exciting – and slightly unnerving – breakthrough and its potential impact on our future.
