Government Technology’s passion is helping spread best practices and spurring innovation in the public sector. The Maryland Digital Government Summit is designed to do just that. The summit has an advisory board that gathers public sector and private sector leaders to create an agenda designed to make that passion relevant and actionable to the state and local government organizations attending the summit. Participants tell us they use the inspirational keynotes, leadership discussions, networking breaks, and timely topics discussed in the numerous breakout sessions to help advance the goals of their organizations and their own career paths.

Keynote – Hacking the Learning CurveConcourse Ballroom A/BBronkar Lee, Peak Performance Expert, Author, Speaker and Dynamic Performer (@BronkarLee) We live and work in a fast-paced, high-pressure world, and if we’re not gaining new skills and continuously upping our games we risk being left behind. Not just in our jobs but in our personal lives. On the bright side, there’s never been a better time to learn for the simple reason that knowledge and information have never been more easily obtainable. But transforming information into ability isn’t so easy. And that’s where Bronkar excels. His unique learning system shortens the runway for anyone, regardless of their goals, interests or inherent talents. In this unforgettable presentation, Bronkar shows us how to re-energize our approach to skill acquisition and hands us the key to unlock our passion for learning. |

Concurrent SessionsReinventing the Constituent ExperienceConcourse Ballroom CIt’s a highly interactive and fast-paced society, and people are getting more demanding about, well, everything. The pressure is mounting on government services too, and one of the Governor’s top priorities is to make “citizen-centric” more than just a buzzword. This session introduces you to creative strategies to remake government’s relationship with its customers into something more stimulating and rewarding. Andrea Garvey, Project and Data Director, Department of Information Technology, State of Maryland Janet Grard, General Manager, NIC Maryland (@grardj) 5G and the Future of WirelessConcourse Ballroom DThe next generation of wireless is still a few years away but now is a good time to start getting familiar with what it will offer and how to prepare for it. Basically, 5G is the solution for dealing with the Internet of Things – millions of sensors and the resulting flood of information. One of the operational trends will be toward a proliferation of “small cells” and “micro towers”, which can only be accomplished with the involvement of local government. This session discusses how and why 5G will be a game-changer. Mitsuko Herrera, Director, ultraMontgomery Program, Department of Technology Services, Montgomery County Government Information Security and Data Loss PreventionCoal Harbour RoomThe security landscape is growing increasingly complex due to factors such as open government, data sharing, cloud, mobility, and escalating expectations by citizens and internal users – all of which open the door to an unsettling variety of risks and vulnerabilities. The key to survival is avoiding, spotting and plugging leaks before major damage occurs. This session looks at strategies, tactics and technologies that are making an impact in the public and private sectors. Craig Bowman, Vice President & Managing Director of Advanced Solutions, Public Sector, Verizon Enterprise Solutions (@wcbowmancraig) Bryan Haynes, Chief Information Officer and Director of Information Technology, Maryland Treasurer’s Office (@BryanHaynes86) Charlie Mello, Networking Specialist, Maryland Public Sector, Aruba, A Hewlett Packard Enterprise Company (representing HCGI) Legacy App Migration to the CloudHeathrow RoomWhen dealing with legacy systems and modernization, there are basically three routes to consider: leave it pretty much where it is (in other words, kick the can down the road), “lift and shift” it to the cloud, or go all-in with SaaS. Deciding between the latter two options can be challenging, particularly when the application is customized or homegrown. This session discusses the practicality of migrating apps to the cloud when SaaS might not be the right fit. Lauren M. Featured Speaker – Decoding the Secrets to Technology SuccessConcourse Ballroom A/BBill Bott, Senior Consulting Partner, Change and Innovation Agency The technology is stable, the staff is dedicated, the direction is clear – so why are so many IT projects still failing to deliver on time and on budget with the desired results? The answer may have nothing to do with your shop but everything to do with the evolving role of the technology leader. There’s a secret to better technology in government and it has nothing to do with your computer, your network, or your data center. This session dives into the next evolution of IT leadership and how it may be the one thing that ties all the advancements of the last two decades together. |

Concurrent SessionsCloud EcosystemsConcourse Ballroom CThe paradigm has already shifted, and just about every organization has ventured into the cloud in one way or another. Some attempts have been more successful than others, some models (public, private, hybrid) have proven more viable than others, and some procurement approaches have fared better than others. This session focuses on lessons learned, practices that work and pitfalls to avoid. David DelGaudio, Director of Cloud Services, Department of Information Technology, State of Maryland Joe Green, Solutions Architect, Technical Pre-Sales, Data Networks (@data_networks) Annamary Holbrook, Manager, Presales, Workday Internet of Things and Its Emerging Impact on GovernmentConcourse Ballroom DThe IoT basically consists of anything that can be connected wirelessly. On the government side, the applications usually boil down to one thing: data. What’s daunting going forward is the sheer amount of data that will be collected and the challenges and headaches that come with it. This session explores what’s on the horizon, how to cope with what’s coming, and most importantly, how to secure it all. Jim Haskins, Solutions Specialist for Connected Communities, Cisco Systems Shawn Taylor, Systems Engineer, Public Sector State and Local Government, ForeScout Technologies Data Sharing – How to Make It Pay OffCoal Harbour RoomPressure is intensifying on government organizations to share information with other agencies and jurisdictions. But one must choose one’s battles. First and foremost, establish whether your data-sharing initiative will solve real-life problems, otherwise it’s just wasted effort. This session looks at some ringing successes and fruitful approaches, including major inroads in the opioid crises. Angelina Guarino, Director of Substance Abuse Programs, Governor’s Office of Crime Control & Prevention, State of Maryland Lisa Henderson, Program Director, Integrated Justice Information Systems, Montgomery County Government Captain Paul Liquorie, Director, Special Investigations Division, Montgomery County Department of Police Accessibility and Assistive TechnologiesHeathrow RoomOne in five Americans live with a disability of some kind, and servicing them is one of the great challenges – and joys – in government today. Technology advances are making almost anything possible, limited only by a willingness to innovate and to investigate new solutions. This session discusses trends, standards, mandates and emerging technologies. Kelby Brick, Director, Governor’s Office of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, State of Maryland Donna Lettow, Digital Accessibility Specialist, Division of Rehabilitation Services, Department of Education, State of Maryland Jim McCarthy, Director, Maryland Technology Assistance Program, Department of Disabilities, State of Maryland |

Fast Track SessionsConcourse Ballroom A/BOpen Data 3.0Open data isn’t just a fad – it’s the future. To quote Star Trek: resistance is futile. There are just too many tangible benefits and too many political mandates to ignore. But it must be done right. Montgomery County has been ahead of the curve for years, and they’ve had plenty of time to test, observe and reflect on what adds value and what doesn’t. This session reveals what they’ve learned and how they’ve reached a whole new level that they call Open Data 3.0. Victoria Lewis, Data Services Manager, Department of Technology Services, Montgomery County Government (@dataMontgomery) FirstNet and NextGen 9-1-1: The Future of Public SafetyThe establishment of FirstNet is a critical step in reaching the national goal of interoperable communications for first responders. Roadblocks and legal hurdles have finally been cleared and progress is underway. Next Generation 9-1-1 also solves myriad problems for public safety and works hand-in-hand with FirstNet. This session provides an update on where things currently stand and what we can expect to see in the future – and when. Alex Rafii, Sales Manager – Acquisition, AT&T Mobility Services Mark Titus, Lead Product Manager, AT&T Public Safety Solutions Don’t Take the Bait!Government organizations are under attack and the stakes have never been higher. Threats of all types are increasingly sophisticated and better organized. Spearfishing and ransomware are becoming full-fledged industries with remarkably low barriers to entry. This session takes an unflinching look at what we’re up against and how to avoid becoming a prize catch.
