Government Technology’s passion is helping spread best practices and spurring innovation in the public sector. The Maine Digital Government Summit is designed to do just that. The summit has an advisory board that gathers public sector and private sector leaders to create an agenda designed to make that passion relevant and actionable to the state and local government organizations attending the summit. Participants tell us they use inspirational keynotes, leadership discussions, networking breaks, and timely topics discussed in the numerous breakout sessions to help advance the goals of their organizations and their own career paths.
Topics Include:
It is my great honor to welcome you to this year’s Maine Digital Summit – this will be our 16th Summit! And while many of the sessions will feature new and innovative topics such as SaaS, IoT, artificial intelligence and virtual reality, traditional topics like workforce, cyber security, and legacy modernization have become annual critical subjects. The Summit also always provides the opportunity to network, the chance to hear industry experts, and the ability to visualize the future together. We have had great response from attendees in the past, both on the timely topics and the knowledgeable speakers; I believe this year’s event will continue that tradition of excellence. I look forward to seeing you at the Augusta Civic Center on September 25 for the Maine Digital Summit.

Keynote – I See Potential in You!AuditoriumThurl Bailey, Inspirational Speaker & Retired Professional Basketball Player (@bigTbailey) How those 5 words changed my life! How can we best discover how much potential we have as individuals and then use that potential collectively to win as a team? The answer may lay in our past. Professional speaker, broadcast analyst for the Utah Jazz and University of Utah, an actor, and an award-winning singer/song writer, Thurl Bailey attended North Carolina State University and was a key player in the 'Wolfpacks' miracle run to the 1983 NCAA Championship. That same year, Thurl led NC State in both scoring and rebounds. The Utah Jazz drafted Thurl in 1983 as the 7th pick of the draft. Jazz management reported that he was selected for the quality of his character, as well as the quality of his game. This was the beginning of 16 years of playing professional basketball – 12 of those years in the NBA. |

Concurrent SessionsData PrivacyKennebec/Penobscot (1st Level)As technology becomes more invasive in our lives, it’s said that the debate between privacy and security is over, and privacy lost. Fortunately for us, that’s not quite true. But there are pressures pushing us in that direction, including transparency, public safety and rampant consumerization. An astounding amount of our personal information is in the hands of third parties, including government agencies. This session ponders one of the hottest issues of our times and what it means for the public sector. Mark Johnson, Vice President, Cloud Automation, Managed Services, Mythics John Scott, Enterprise Infrastructure Architect, Office of Information Technology, State of Maine Todd Tolhurst, Director of Development, InforME, NIC Government’s Quest for TalentSagadahoc (2nd Level)It is no secret - government needs a strong backbone of talented workers to successfully deliver public services. But challenges in the employee recruitment and retention process continue to plague organizations. Building a diverse workforce with limited resources to compete with the private sector mean agencies must get creative. It’s not easy, but not impossible. This session discusses the latest in attracting, retaining and enhancing your future IT workforce including an introduction to Maine’s program to recruit and welcome Veterans to the workplace. You will leave with actions you can take to help solve your “Quest for Talent”. Auta Main, Veteran’s Program Manager, Bureau of Employment Services, Department of Labor, State of Maine Randall A. So that means procurement must offer an awful lot of opportunity! Some things to look into are: How can we leverage contracts and purchasing power to save more time and money? Is there anything we can do to make the process smoother for providers? Is there a way to better manage vendor contracts and relations? This session explores ways to turn procurement into something more sublime to all parties involved. General Sessions – Emerging TechnologiesAuditoriumAutonomous and Connected VehiclesThere are definitive moments in history when technology exceeds our wildest dreams and faces us with one realization: the future is here. For many, that moment comes with the onset of autonomous and connected vehicles. But as technology races ahead, it raises important questions about how government will implement, regulate and oversee these high-tech vehicles. Jeremiah Bartlett, Transportation Systems Engineer, Department of Public Works, City of Portland Uberizing GovernmentUber, Amazon, Alexa, Siri, AirBnB – these are just a few of the innovations that have given rise to entirely new paradigms in customer experience. Can government do the same? Absolutely! There’s no other choice. Sooner or later, it must be done. The good news is that it’s closer and more attainable than one might expect. This session looks at some innovative tools and strategies that will revamp and revitalize government’s relationship with its citizens. Dan Andrews, General Manager, InforME, NIC |
