Overview

We hope you were able to join your colleagues at this in-person exclusive briefing for Industry Insider – Texas members with the CIO and CISO of the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS). DFPS works with communities to promote safe and healthy families and protect children and vulnerable adults from abuse, neglect, and exploitation. DFPS has five major programs that do this important work:

DFPS is the 5th largest (by budget) department in Texas with an annual budget of $2.6 billion and an estimated annual IT budget of $115 million. Speaking at the event are Drew McGrath, CIO, and Jennifer Bush, CISO.  They will be spoke about DFPS’ IT organization, governance, current projects, future priorities and how they work with industry partners.

Drew McGrath

Chief Information Officer, Department of Family and Protective Services, State of Texas

Drew McGrath is currently serving as the Chief Information Officer (CIO) at the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS). He oversees an Information Technology team consisting of 274 staff and roughly 170 contractors. Drew has worked in various IT roles for the past 30 years in the private sector, as a contractor, and as an employee of various Texas agencies. Over this timeframe, he has served in various roles including: software developer/engineer, analyst, tester, database administrator, architect, applications manager, operations manager, technology director, Deputy CIO, and now CIO. He prides himself on not only being a leader and decision-maker, but also a mentor, listener, motivator, and coach for his leadership team and staff as they grow into future leaders and CIOs.
Fun Fact: Drew and his wife are the happy owners of 7 golden retrievers and 2 great Pyrenees mixes.

Chief Information Security Officer, Texas Department of Family and Protective Services

Jennifer Bush serves as the Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) at the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS). She has a strong background in IT and cybersecurity, as evidenced by her possession of multiple industry-standard certifications like CISSP, CISM, and GIAC. Jennifer also holds a degree in IT with a specialization in cybersecurity and information assurance and has completed the HHS Executive Leadership Academy and the Governor's Center Executive Leadership for Information Technology Excellence (ELITE) at the University of Texas (UT) LBJ School of Public Affairs.
As the CISO, Jennifer plays a critical role in ensuring the security and safety of the information and systems that support the agency's mission of "Protecting the Unprotected." She has been recognized with several awards for her contributions to the field of cybersecurity, including the 2019 TASSCC Rising Star Award and ISC2 Exam Developer. Jennifer is also actively involved in mentoring programs like Women in Cybersecurity (WiCyS), The UT STEM MUSE Program, and NCA HBCU programs, demonstrating her commitment to helping women and minorities succeed in cybersecurity.
