Government Technology’s passion is helping spread best practices and spurring innovation in the public sector. The Hawaii Digital Government Summit is designed to do just that. The summit has an advisory board that gathers public sector and private sector leaders to create an agenda designed to make that passion relevant and actionable to the state and local government organizations attending the summit. Participants tell us they use the inspirational keynotes, leadership discussions, networking breaks, and timely topics discussed in the numerous breakout sessions to help advance the goals of their organizations and their own career paths.

Keynote – Creating a Culture of Innovation in Government – Mission Impossible?Coral Ballroom 3Michele R. Weslander Quaid, Founder & President, Sunesis Nexus LLC Transforming a government organization to create a culture of innovation may seem like an impossible mission, but it can be done! No one knows this better than Michele Weslander Quaid, who was recruited to serve as a senior executive in the US National Security Community following the terrorist attacks of 9-11-2001, and given the challenge to lead change that would help them transform the way they do business and better enable mission success. Many times she and her team of change agents were told that what they were trying to accomplish was “impossible,” but they made the “impossible” a reality. In this inspiring keynote, Michele will share insights and recommendations based on her experience, in both the public sector and private sector, that will provide encouragement and inspiration to take the lead to affect positive change in your organization. |

Concurrent SessionsBuilding Hawaii’s Government IT WorkforceCoral 4The IT landscape is dramatically changing – the technologies we use, the people we work with, and the way we deliver services are transforming at a pace previously unforeseen. This panel discussion will talk about the current make-up of the multigenerational workforce, how generations can collaborate to solve IT problems, and strategies for building a training program to support the workforce of the future. Craig Grivette, Principal, KPMG David Keane, Information Technology Manager, Department of Human Resources Development, State of Hawaii Liane Moriyama, Administrator, Hawaii Criminal Justice Data Center, Department of Attorney General, State of Hawaii Dr. Karie Willyerd, Workplace Futurist, SuccessFactors (@angler) Services, Platforms and Clouds…Oh My!Coral 2XaaS or “anything as a service” is the delivery of IT as a service through hybrid cloud computing and is a reference to either one or a combination of software as a service (SaaS), infrastructure as a service (IaaS), platform as a service (PaaS), communications as a service (CaaS), monitoring as a service (MaaS), or any of a growing list of as a service offerings including, backup, database, desktop, customization, identity, infrastructure, platform, and software. Much hype surrounds these technologies and there is lot of shaking out to do, but in the meantime, there are real benefits to be seen by business, “customers,” taxpayers, government agencies, and IT. Concurrent SessionsTransforming Government: IT’s Seat at the TableCoral 4Governor Ige has charged his administration with changing Hawaii for the better, and it’s clear that IT is expected to play a crucial role in making it happen. Success is in direct proportion to the degree that IT aligns with business processes and – most importantly – business objectives. So how does IT become a strategic partner? It’s more than just gaining a seat at the table. It goes deeper than that, requiring a day-to-day focus and viewpoint that goes beyond “business as usual”. In this heartening session speakers will discuss the impact that organizational development, change management and governance will play in the transformation of Hawaii. Moderator: Burt Lum, Executive Director, Hawaii Open Data (@Bytemarks) Joy Barua, Director, Community Benefit & Health Policy, Kaiser Permanente, Hawaii and Transform Hawai’i Leadership Committee Member Todd Nacapuy, Chief Information Officer, Office of Enterprise Services, State of Hawaii Bulent M. Taskan, National Director, State & Local Government, Research and Education, Government Markets Group, Level 3 Communications Future of CybersecurityCoral 1It’s an old adage that the cyber landscape is constantly shifting. But some things remain unchanged. Attacks are still efforts to rob, disrupt or avenge. Motives are still economic, political or cultural. The overall battlefield remains much the same but the weapons and tactics continue to evolve – often dramatically. This session looks at emerging trends, developments and strategies on the cyber front and how to get ready for the clashes ahead. Mark L. Cohn, Chief Technology Officer, Unisys Federal Systems Agile ITCoral 2Conventional project management and software development are deliberate and orderly, emphasizing rigorous specification and planning. Today, however, our consumer-centric society is pushing the pace of development and response, leading to far shorter windows and putting a strain on traditional methodologies. This session looks into current thinking about how, when and why an agile approach is the right way to go. Keith Stern, Director, Tactical Collaboration, World Wide Technology Asynchrony Labs The Internet of Things Enabling Smart CitiesLehua SuiteThe term Smart Cities has received much publicity and press, but what does it really mean and how can your community get started? In this session, panel members discuss what is being done today, where initial successes have been found, and how you can determine the real value proposition (benefits & beneficiaries) of Smart City projects. Featured Speaker – Stretch: How to Future Proof Yourself for Tomorrow’s WorkplaceCoral Ballroom 3Dr. Karie Willyerd, Workplace Futurist, SuccessFactors (@angler) Although we don’t have a sell-by-date stamped on our foreheads, not being obsolete in the workplace is the number one concern employees share around the world. There’s a lot of conflicting information out there. On one hand is a terrible shortage of technology workers. On the other hand, we hear that government IT jobs might not exist for long, at least not in their current form. The truth is that there will always be a shortage of technology know-how. But the definition of “know-how” keeps shifting and the half-life of IT skills seems to get shorter and shorter. The key is to keep your skills sets valuable and marketable, and if you’re a manager, doing the same for your team. Done right, you can remain forever in demand in a profession that never goes out of style. This presentation will discuss how to stay relevant in a shifting workplace, the realities employees should consider in planning their development, the practices successful people employ to prepare themselves for tomorrow’s workplace, and how organizations can support people who want to Stretch to achieve their career goals. |
