Migrating to the Cloud – One Size Does Not Fit All!

The best way to achieve success as you migrate to the cloud might just depend on the size and needs of your organization. This presentation looks at three groups at Harvard that represent small, medium, and large migrations and analyzes what they did, how it worked, and what they learned. There will be a panel discussion about migration challenges – both shared and those unique to each group.

EcoLearn: Supporting Ecosystem Science Understanding Using Immersive Technologies

Understanding relationships within ecosystems requires reasoning about complex causal dynamics – a form of reasoning shown to be challenging for learners. EcoLearn research uses immersive virtual ecosystems to help make the unseen visible by modeling ecosystems dynamics that are impossible to represent in the real world. We present our work with EcoXPT: inquiry and complex causal reasoning in middle school and EcoMOD: computational thinking and ecosystem science learning in elementary grades.

Battling the Blah-Blah-Blahs: Seven Tips for Making Websites Readable

Nearly all universities commit the deadly sin of too much text on their websites. Lengthy (and numerous) paragraphs of complex sentences cause eyeballs to glaze over and users to miss critical information. Fortunately, you don’t need to be a professional writer to battle text bloat. In this talk, a website designer and a journalist team up to offer simple tools for making your website pithy, lively, and genuinely informative. The battle can be won, even when faced with the worst case of the blah-blah-blahs.

Digital Transformation – Building a Framework for Change in Higher Ed (Exhibitor Session)

Much has been written about change in higher education. Much has been written about strategic planning. This session combines the two, providing a framework for universities to create new digital learning environments and digitalize their campuses. Universities know that they have to change, but are often challenged by the convergence of technology and pedagogy. Where to begin? What technologies can affect learning and the campus experience? How can we get faculty on board? How to create a vision for the future? This session will present a framework and highlight how one university was able to effectively drive change across campus.

Digital Signage Everywhere, Not a Drop of Content

Digital signage is all around us, but, more often than not, the technology and the displays are installed before content, audience, or purpose is considered. Teachly: Using Data to Improve Pedagogy, Diversity, and Inclusion

Not a day goes by at Harvard and other college campuses across the nation without pleas for improving diversity and inclusion. While the great majority of faculty members identify with this goal, very few feel empowered to do something concrete about it. Teachly aims to change that. Teachly is a web application developed at the Harvard Kennedy School that provides faculty with critical data regarding students, faculty behavior, and in-class interactions. Based on results from a pilot at HKS with more than 30 faculty members, we firmly believe that faculty can improve their pedagogy by getting to know their students and teaching practices better through the use of data.

Running with the Unicorns: Automating Environment Build and Deployment Processes

HBX, the digital education initiative of HBS, has developed a custom learning environment which is run entirely in AWS. Building environments and provisioning systems required many manual steps. Deployments were checklists and manually performed. The stacks felt monolithic. In this session, we will discuss our efforts to migrate system provisioning processes from Puppet to Ansible and embracing “Infrastructure as Code” to improve environment consistency, align with and empower development teams, and increase automation. We will also showcase a live demonstration of how HBX uses Ansible to spin up entire environments at the push of a button and perform a scripted deployment. HBX developers will walk us through how they provision vagrant instances with the same playbooks that build the QA systems in AWS.
