Government Technology's passion is promoting best practices and spurring innovation in the public sector – more important than ever in challenging times like these. The Virtual Digital Government Summit offers a unique opportunity to explore a variety of technology topics and possibilities. We hope you were able to join us for a day of powerful sessions that provided inspiration, participation, education, and thought-provocation!
Over the past year we all made the emergency transition to different operating models built around remote work and social distancing. With the arrival and distribution of vaccines many are now looking ahead to a “hybrid” operating model and a sustainable “new normal”. Our teams and vendor partners have risen to the challenges with transformational technologies and processes in many areas. We all continue to navigate the personal challenges of remote work, virtual meeting burnout and how to care for our employees. The annual Digital Government Summit will continue to be a valuable investment of time and effort. It gives us the opportunity to refocus and recharge by connecting with our peers, be inspired by their successes, and expand our vision for how technology can better serve our organizations and our citizens. This year’s event will be virtual but you can count on the Digital Government Summit team to deliver a format that is fresh and engaging and brings the opportunity for even more to participate. Please make it a priority for you and your teams to join this year.

In this enlightening talk, James Clear focuses on the science of small habits, how they work and how their effects compound and multiply over time. You will come away with practical strategies that you can immediately apply in your daily life. James Clear, Habits Expert, #1 New York Times Bestselling Author |

Featured Speaker – The Future of Work and LeadershipThe Fourth Industrial Revolution is transforming the way we work, interact, and live our lives by blurring the boundaries between virtual and physical systems. Society will continue to be disrupted in countless ways, but Heather McGowan offers us a bit of reassurance: The future of work is human. We need managers and leaders who inspire and cultivate human potential in the face of constant digital disruption. In this thought-provoking session, Heather encourages us to rethink our systems of education and workforce development, our organization of work and workers, our process of talent attraction and retention and even ourselves. Heather McGowan, Future of Work Strategist, Co-Author of The Adaptation Advantage |

General Session – The Art of ReinventionNone of us want to repeat last year, but we made tremendous headway in many, many ways. The gap between IT and business narrowed considerably. We accomplished things in a month that normally take a year. We found more freedom to innovate. We forged unexpected partnerships. We procured at record speeds. Truthfully, we reinvented ourselves, and now is not the time to take the foot off the gas. This session discusses how to build on our progress and keep the momentum going strong! Moderator: Zach Patton, Chief Editor, Content Studio, Government Technology Alicia Graham, Managing Director for Experience Transformation Focused on Public Service and Health, Accenture |

This session examines how to keep pace with changing needs. Moderator: Steve Towns, Deputy Chief Content Officer, Content Studio, Government Technology Daniele Loffreda, Senior Advisor, Enterprise Solutions, Ciena Derek Masseth, Executive Director, Sun Corridor Network James McCabe, Senior Enterprise Network Architect, University Technology Office, Arizona State University Getting Serious about ModernizationAntiquated systems are nuisances at best and showstoppers at worst. 2020 exposed some serious shortcomings, and it’s time to take modernization more seriously. Our technical debt is coming due! The question is: Where to begin? This session discusses where to focus, what to prioritize and how to proceed. Moderator: Joe Morris, Deputy Chief Innovation Officer, Center for Digital Government Arthur Ford, Director, Public Sector Strategy, Tricentis Richard McHattie, Chief Technology and Innovation Officer, County Clerk of Superior Court, Maricopa County Cassie Sherwood, Strategic Account Executive, DocuSign Readiness, Responsiveness and ResilienceThe pandemic brought our society to its collective knees, but IT teams excelled in standing things back up quickly. Along the way, we learned some valuable lessons, one of which is that the next virus, fire, freeze, flood or earthquake is just around the corner. This session asks (and answers) the question: With what we know now, what will we do differently next time? Concurrent SessionsCloud Trends and StrategiesFaced with serious economic and social challenges, government organizations are in search of ways to increase scalability, agility, accessibility and cost efficiency. While it is probably impractical to sustain a dominant remote-first work environment, it is clearly unrealistic to insist on “office-first.” Hybrid is our future. What will this look like in Arizona? Can we keep a dispersed workforce engaged over the long-term? How do we create a culture that fits the times we live in? Should we be thinking differently about technology and security? In this session, a panel of thought-leaders explores possibilities, probabilities and lessons learned. Moderator: Alan Cox, Executive Vice President and Publisher, Government Technology Magazine Sandip Dholakia, Chief Information Officer, Information Technology Department, City of Chandler Tamara Dukes, Vice President, Partnership Solutions, NIC Doug Lange, State Chief Strategy Officer, Department of Administration, State of Arizona It All Comes Down to RelationshipsIn the old days, IT was a back-office activity, working under the radar in relative peace. Oh, how times have changed. IT is now front and center in virtually everything that government does. Success – and survival – depends on being adept at winning friends and influencing people. Not just your immediate colleagues, but upper leadership, budget directors, legislators, service providers and peers in other agencies and jurisdictions. This session dives into the vital subject of communication and why it must be the cornerstone of your role as an IT executive. General Session – Transforming the Government ExperienceThe events of last year pushed government organizations to fast-track plans and strategies to digitize government services. This session explores innovative ways to better engage and support our customers at every level.
