Keynote – What’s Your Story?Alabama BallroomKelly Swanson, Strategic Narrative Specialist IT is an adventure. Or should be! Every project is a journey, and we need to be better at promoting what we’re doing and how much we’re accomplishing. It’s important to be able to paint a picture that resonates. Data alone is not enough anymore. It’s already over-used, mis-used, abused and fake-newsed. The key is wrapping your data in a way that makes people care. You need the secret ingredient that is probably missing from presentations, pitches, speeches and any situation where you are trying to get buy-in. In this mind-expanding session, you will find out how to go from manipulating to motivating, from communicating to connecting, from telling people what to do to making them want to do it. Learn from the master! |

Concurrent SessionsSecurity Over the EdgeMontgomery 5The cyber landscape is constantly shifting, and strategies and safeguards that were considered secure just a few years ago don’t cut it anymore. The “edge” is getting more difficult to define. Networks are becoming more distributed. Devices continue to proliferate. The cloud is literally everywhere. IoT is a looming tidal wave. This session looks at current and future trends, threats and strategies on the cyber front. Ryan Allen, Chief Information Security Officer, Office of Information Technology, State of Alabama Kenny Holmes, Head of US Public Sector, Fortinet Data RevolutionMontgomery 7It’s a common refrain that government should operate more like an enterprise. This approach holds true in some ways more than others, but it particularly applies to data and how it’s used – or not used – in meaningful ways. It all starts with data sharing. But why isn’t it done enough? Are the barriers cultural, legal or technical? This session explores the obstacles to data sharing and the tools and strategies that will take us from siloed data to actionable information. James Carlson, Public Safety Practice Lead, State, Local Government and Education Strategy, CenturyLink Gary Parker, Chief Data Officer, Data Governance Office, and Director, Alabama’s State HIE (Health Information Exchange) – One Health Record, Alabama Medicaid Agency Navigating the CloudRiverview 5As state and local governments move to the cloud at an increasing pace, they’re running into some common holdups, including the determination of which workloads are cloud-ready and which models are most appropriate. The bottom line: organizations should have a comprehensive cloud strategy - one that takes into account the right balance between on-prem control and cloud innovation. This session discusses current trends and lessons learned. T. Craig Blakely, Associate Director and Manager, Infrastructure Services Section, Alabama Medicaid Herb Thompson, Strategist, State and Local Government and Education, VMware Cool Collaboration ToolsRiverview 3You must communicate to collaborate! And that can be a tall order with too-busy colleagues and virtual teams. It’s not workable anymore to rely on emailing colleagues, knocking on doors and leaving voicemails. Technology makes it so much easier to share ideas, streamline workflows, track progress and communicate in general. This session features some of the most popular technologies and approaches to help teams work together more effectively and enjoyably. Concurrent SessionsThe Agile TransformationMontgomery 5Conventional project management and software development are deliberate and orderly, emphasizing rigorous specification and planning. Today, however, the pace of development is accelerating, and the drive toward shared services and legacy modernization puts even more strain on traditional methodology. This session looks at current thinking about how, when and why a rapid and agile development approach is the most practical and effective way to go. Dr. Jeremy Pate, Associate Director of Technology, Center for Advanced Public Safety (CAPS), College of Engineering, The University of Alabama How Do We Determine What Citizens Really Want?Montgomery 7In this highly interactive and fast-paced society, people are getting more demanding about, well, everything. The pressure is mounting on government to make “citizen-centric” more than a buzzword. But how do we know what they really want? And who are “they”, anyway? This session discusses innovative strategies that can pave the way to making government’s relationship with its customers more stimulating and rewarding. Clay Weaver, Chief Solutions Officer, Office of Information Technology, State of Alabama Mike Wons, Former Chief Technology Officer, State of Illinois Data Center EvolutionRiverview 5While the cloud seems to be taking over the world, a future of a government without data centers is nowhere in sight. In a constantly changing technology landscape, how can the public sector utilize existing data centers to meet their modernization challenges head on? This session aims to answer that question and dives into strategies for how to optimize the use of existing architecture. Basically, 5G is the solution for dealing with the Internet of Things – millions of sensors and the resulting flood of information. One of the operational trends will be toward a proliferation of “small cells”, which can only be accomplished with the involvement of local government. This session discusses how and why 5G will be a game-changer. Owen Workman, Principal Technical Consulting Engineer, AT&T Strategies for a Smart AlabamaThe concept of smart communities has been around for a while but in recent years it’s really picked up steam.
