Keynote – Collateral Change: Finding Balance in Our Digitally Evolving WorldAlabama Ballroom, Salons BCDEMichael Hakkarinen, Instructional Technology Specialist, Utah Education Network (@edtechakk) Is there any doubt that this is the Age of Disruption? Technology is rending the fabric of society as we know it, driving historic levels of transformative change and mindboggling opportunities. But what are the consequences of this disruption on the lives of everyday citizens? The ramifications run deep, and it’s time to shift our focus from the technology to the resulting “collateral change” in human behavior. We’ve long passed some serious tipping points. This provocative session explores new communication paradigms, runaway device infatuation, generation gaps, radical education, future game-changers and creative ways to engage the “new citizen.” |

Concurrent SessionsCybersecurity Incident ResponseRiverview 7Can we ever be 100% digitally secure in this age of IoT, Cloud, mobility, data-sharing, hacktivism, cyberwarfare, et al.? The answer, of course, is no. Government is diligently working to improve security and thus lower the odds. However, it is imperative to also have plans and policies in place to follow if a hack does occur, and much can be gleaned from debacles and near-misses in the public sector. This session looks at what we can do to limit damage if/when disaster strikes. DuWayne Aikins Sr., Principle Architect, Strategic Services, AT&T Ryan Allen, Chief Information Security Officer, Office of Information Technology, State of Alabama Joel Cook, Director, Governance Risk and Compliance, Office of Information Technology, State of Alabama Michael Pruett, Director, Cybersecurity, Office of Information Technology, State of Alabama Getting Our Heads in the CloudRiverview 1The question is no longer whether to make the leap into the Cloud or not. Now it’s a matter of “how, what, when and where.” There’s a lot to consider in getting started, and valuable lessons have been learned in both government and private industry in recent years. This session focuses on the factors involved in teeing up a successful cloud initiative. John Demas, Deputy IT Director, Information Systems, Department of Labor, State of Alabama Allison Young, Regional Director, Strategic Sales and Service Delivery, Laserfiche About Your Data…Riverview 5The key to superlative information management is accurately determining the nature of the data, including where it came from, where it resides, its format, who owns it, who plans to use it, and how it will be accessed and used. These questions can be tedious and even painful to answer but they are critical steps to optimizing security and getting the most out of analytics. This session narrows in on building a solid foundation through effective data management. Curtis A. Carver Jr., Ph.D., Vice President and Chief Information Officer, The University of Alabama at Birmingham (@carverc) Jeremy McQueen, Chief Data Officer, Office of Information Technology, State of Alabama Virtual InfrastructureRiverview 3Is the data center dead? Not by any means. But the ground is shifting under the weight of trends such as XaaS (anything as a service), software-defined data centers, and hyperconvergence (i.e., integrating compute, storage, virtualization resources, networking and other components). This session takes a look at some new technologies and approaches that are challenging conventional paradigms. Concurrent Sessions#WorkfromhomeRiverview 7In a world where technology use is increasing every day and with every generation of workers, teleworking should be seriously considered as an option. It is cost effective and offers other compelling advantages for both employer and employees. Teleworking and other creative work schedules may also become necessary to entice and retain a capable work force. But what are the negatives? Governance of data, security, productivity…there’s a lot to consider. This session explores the possibilities, policies, and successes of working from home. Katrina Bowling, Education Systems Administrator, Office of School Readiness, Department of Early Childhood Education, State of Alabama Neal Kelley, Senior Training Consultant, SummaSource at Auburn University at Montgomery Software Development Life CycleRiverview 1Planning, creating, testing, and deploying…this is the basic life cycle of software and application development. Think of the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC) as a spellcheck – one that can locate errors in software creation before they’re discovered in a later stage and lay out a road map for getting everything right the first time. In a world of ever-changing technology, there are quite a few methodologies: agile, lean, waterfall, etc. This session checks out the latest trends and successful approaches in the world of software development. Scott Brandhuber, Configuration Manager – CAMMS Project, Department of Transportation, State of Alabama Mike Johnson, IT Manager - CAMMS Section, Department of Transportation, State of Alabama Greg Lee, Manager, Enterprise Application Services, NIC Accessibility and Assistive TechnologiesRiverview 5One in five Americans lives with a disability of some kind and meeting their needs is one of the great challenges – and joys – in government today. Technology advances are making almost anything possible, limited only by a willingness to innovate and to investigate new solutions. This session discusses trends, standards, mandates and emerging technologies. General Session – Save the Trees!Alabama Ballroom, Salons BCDEGoing paperless has been a declared goal of government for more years than we can count. The benefits are too numerous to list, but perhaps the #1 driver is that it makes Enterprise Content Management (ECM) possible – combining technology and personnel to create a far more efficient workflow process. Great strides have already been made, but it’s time to accelerate the pace. This session discusses the latest trends, tools and lessons learned that can be successfully applied in any organization – and soon.
