Government Technology’s passion is helping spread best practices and spurring innovation in the public sector. The Alabama Digital Government Summit is designed to do just that. The summit has an advisory board that gathers public sector and private sector leaders to create an agenda designed to make that passion relevant and actionable to the state and local government organizations attending the summit. Participants tell us they use the inspirational keynotes, leadership discussions, networking breaks, and timely topics discussed in the numerous breakout sessions to help advance the goals of their organizations and their own career paths.
Topics Include:
“Technology is constantly changing, and it’s so easy to get overwhelmed. You’re not alone! That’s why we’re here to offer you actual strategies from the people who know the industry best. Ask questions, get answers and learn new ways to tackle your organization’s most crippling technology issues. I look forward to seeing you at the Alabama Digital Government Summit!”

Concurrent SessionsTurbulence Within the CloudRiverview 5Cloud Service adoption and use continues to ramp up for Government agencies. But do you know what the major security, compliance and data considerations are before agreeing to and using a Cloud Service? This session will outline what you should agree to before using a Cloud Service to protect your data so you don’t end up in a fog of bewilderment and put your data and agency at risk. Come learn about the most important considerations before adopting a Cloud Service and hear vendor responses that will lead to a solid foundation and Cloud Service Provider relationship. David Davis, Lead Sales Engineer, CenturyLink Data Rich, Results Poor?Riverview 3Government by nature is in the data collection business, and there is no shortage of information from which to extract actionable insights. The challenge for agencies is to reinvent how they leverage the vast amounts of information they already collect. Groundbreaking success requires stepping outside the box, adopting new mindsets, and embracing new tools and approaches. This session focuses on how to make analytics pay off big in your organization. Matt Jones, Innovation Leader, CGI Alabama Cybersecurity ProgramRiverview 7Many organizations see Information Technology (and especially IT Security) as a mysterious, but necessary evil – not necessarily understanding that IT is intended to facilitate business functions, and overall organizational operation and stability. The Alabama Cybersecurity Program is part of a larger conceptual business practice known as Enterprise Risk Management. Enterprise Risk Management strives to consider information and technology, not as limiting/authoritative kingdom builder, but as a strategic resource that allows agencies to thrive, while providing better services to the public. The Alabama Cybersecurity Program accounts for all areas of risk to the Confidentiality, Integrity, & Availability of information systems and information – areas including Managerial, Operational, Technical, & Privacy – and is put into action using the cyclical NIST Risk Management Framework. Concurrent SessionsThe Efficiency of Identity Access ManagementRiverview 7The rise of digital business has put identity access management in a position to contribute more than incremental improvements in efficiency. Today’s access management increases outcomes and citizen experience and embraces innovation. This session offers real-world insight into modern identity architecture and governance. Darren W. Carroll, Practice Director, Security & Risk Management, SHI (@darrencarroll41) Customer Experience DesignRiverview 3In the past, design has most often occurred fairly far downstream in the development process and has focused on making products aesthetically attractive. Now supporting users by uncovering latent needs, behaviors, and desires are considered important design factors. Before you start thinking about Digital Transformation and redesigning your business operations, it is important to understand the customer you serve, the experience that customer has with your organization at every interaction and in every step of their journey. Cindy Shrum, Information Technology Manager, Department of Mental Health, State of Alabama (@cynthiashrum) Will Talbot, Solutions Manager, Laserfiche Consulting, Laserfiche Organizational Continuity and RecoveryRiverview 5Disruptions are an expected part of business, so it’s important to be prepared for when they occur. Business continuity planning helps organizations to better understand what is most important to continue in times of disruption, to identify the resources required to keep these important business functions and services running, and to develop strategies for how to achieve it. This session will discuss how having a practiced plan for recovery enables organizations to take practical steps to become more resilient and to be able to minimize the impact of any disruptive event. Fast Track SessionsAlabama Ballroom, Salons BCDEInternet of Things and Its Impact on GovernmentThe Internet of Things (IoT) is a series of billions – soon to be trillions – of sensors and devices connected to one another via the Internet. Most of it is automated, and the possibilities that IoT brings to society are the stuff of science fiction. But it’s all very real, and the question on many people’s minds: Is government ready? This session explores the role of government in using, exploiting, controlling and surviving the hyper-connected world of IoT. Bruno Litman, Director of Development, Alabama Interactive Montgomery Internet Exchange: Connectivity and CollaborationJust over a year ago the Montgomery Cyber Connection, the state's first Internet Exchange, was launched. A first for Alabama. This Internet Exchange Point is a facility where Internet Service Providers and networks of proxy servers exchange Internet traffic. This is not only a milestone for the State and City but also a success story of private and public partnerships and collaboration of federal, state, and local government. This session will discuss what it took to bring a world class exchange to Alabama and the ongoing benefits to government and citizens.
