Overview

The California Department of Parks and Recreation oversees 279 state park units, over 340 miles of coastline, 970 miles of lake and river frontage, 15,000 campsites, 5,200 miles of trails, 3,195 historic buildings and more than 11,000 known prehistoric and historic archaeological sites. The department contains the largest and most diverse recreational, natural and cultural heritage holdings of any state agency in the nation. As Chief Information Officer, Patrick Dennis oversees the technology needs of over 4,600 employees in a department with a $900 million budget.

Patrick Dennis

Patrick Dennis

Patrick Dennis is the Deputy Director and CIO for the California Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR), a position he’s held since 2018.  As the CIO, Dennis has overall responsibility for the Information Technology Division (ITD) activities that support DPR’s critical lines of business, which includes Park Operations, Law Enforcement, Natural and Cultural Resources and the Office of Historic Preservation to name just a few.  Dennis’s Division offers the Project Management Office, Application Development, Network and Client Services; Web and Application Development; IT Procurement and Contracting; and IT Infrastructure and Security Services.  Additionally, Dennis is responsible for the development of the departmental IT strategic direction, and technology operational plans in support all of DPR’s business operations.  Previously, Dennis had most recently served as a special projects director at the California Department of Technology (CDT).  Dennis started at CDT in 2012 and served in various leadership roles including; section chief in the department’s Statewide Information Technology Project Delivery Office, Business Integration lead for the State Technology Approval Reform (STAR) Project, where he led efforts to reform the statewide policy supporting the state’s IT Project Approval Lifecycle (PAL), and served as a branch manager of CDT’s internal IT operations.   Before coming to the Department of Technology, Dennis worked for nearly 20 years, in project implementation and systems testing for the Franchise Tax Board.

Alan is Executive Vice President of e.Republic and Publisher of Government Technology magazine, where he is involved in the annual production of all live and virtual events, webinars, custom content, and the editorial and strategic direction for Governing, Government Technology, Emergency Management, Techwire, the Center for Digital Government, and the Center for Digital Education.
Alan began his career selling to government and private sector organizations as a reseller but has focused exclusively on the use of technology in state and local government, K12, and higher education for most of his career. For over 35 years, Alan has worked with industry, education, and government officials to help them better understand the importance and use of information technology. Alan received his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration at California State University, Sacramento.
