Government Technology’s passion is helping spread best practices and spurring innovation in the public sector. The Los Angeles Digital Government Summit is designed to do just that. The summit has an advisory board that gathers public sector and private sector leaders to create an agenda designed to make that passion relevant and actionable to the state and local government organizations attending the summit. Participants tell us they use the inspirational keynotes, leadership discussions, networking breaks, and timely topics discussed in the numerous breakout sessions to help advance the goals of their organizations and their own career paths.

Keynote – Leading on the EdgeCalifornia Grand BallroomManley Feinberg, World-class Climber, Adventurer and IT Leader (@manleyf) IT officials often struggle to deliver more value under tightening constraints and rising expectations. Throw in the complications of regulations, a changing workforce, constantly evolving technology, plus the chaos of day-to-day life, and you are facing some serious challenges. It can feel like you’re walking too close to the edge, and the old adage “Don’t look down!” applies just as much to a tough deadline as climbing the sheer face of El Capitan. Manley Feinberg has tackled and conquered impossible environments – from breakneck corporate expansion to nature’s most hostile terrains. In this unforgettable keynote, Manley reveals his 7 Vertical Lessons that will enable you to lead, contribute and inspire in ways that will take you – and your teams – to bold new heights. |

Concurrent SessionsThe Future of CybersecurityPacific Ballroom 1It’s an old adage that the cyber landscape is constantly shifting. But some things remain unchanged. Attacks are still efforts to rob, disrupt or avenge. Motives are still economic, political or cultural. The overall battlefield remains much the same but the weapons and tactics continue to evolve – often dramatically. This session looks at emerging trends, developments and strategies on the cyber front to prepare a roadmap for the clashes ahead. Nic Borton, Director, Security Research, PTP Timothy Lee, Chief Information Security Officer, Information Technology Agency, City of Los Angeles Jonathan Trull, Global Chief Cybersecurity Advisor, Enterprise Cybersecurity Group, Microsoft (@jonathantrull) Internet of Things, Smart Cities, and Its Impact on GovernmentPacific Ballroom 2The Internet of Things (IoT) is a series of billions – soon to be trillions – of sensors and devices connected to one another via the Internet. Most of it is automated, and the possibilities that IoT brings to society are the stuff of science fiction. But it’s all very real, and the question on many people’s minds: Is government ready? This session explores the role of government in using, exploiting, controlling and surviving the hyper-connected world of IoT and how it will affect our communities. Tim Brooks, Principal, Business Development and Big Data Practice, World Wide Technology (@wwt_inc) Leah Lewis, Former Chief Information Officer, State of Colorado (@LeahELewis) Rob Silverberg, Chief Technology Officer of Applications, State, Local Government and Education, EMC (@RobSilverberg1) Enterprise ModernizationPacific Ballroom 3Is the data center dead? Not by any means. But the ground is shifting under the weight of trends such as XaaS (anything as a service), software-defined data centers, and hyperconvergence (i.e., integrating compute, storage, virtualization resources, networking, and other components). This session takes a look at some new technologies and approaches that are challenging conventional paradigms. Rick Davis, Vice President and Chief Technology Officer, US West, CGI Gary Pilafas, Senior Director, Cloud Product Management, ViON Corporation (@GaryPilafas) A Roadmap for Success: Where do CIOs Come From?Angeleno RoomIs there one path to leadership? Featured Speaker – Peak Academy: What Would MacGyver Do?California Grand BallroomBrian Elms, Director, Peak Academy and Analytics, City and County of Denver, Colorado In March, CBS announced the reboot of MacGyver. Like the 1980s when the original TV series garnered a large following because of the inventive and resourceful character, today’s challenges mean we could use another MacGyver. The Denver Peak Academy fixes problems by helping public employees become somebody’s MacGyver – helping the City and County of Denver eliminate waste and continuously improve its business processes. Along the way, it has refined its processes by integrating behavioral science and extending its reach to public agencies across North America. The academy experience is the subject of a new book from the Governing Management Series called Peak Performance. The coauthor, Brian Elms, will explore how to innovate in a resource-deprived environment including: Peak’s approach to process improvement and innovations, innovating without technology, and Peak’s tools and techniques. |

It is also a strong motivator for most employees who know that they could do a better job “if only…” Innovation, and innovative thinking need to become part of the culture of government service. This session will provide an update on why innovation must be a key part of our business models, and will feature case studies from Los Angeles departments. There are just too many tangible benefits, including public engagement, transparency, reduced information requests, economic development, and even datathons. Is it time to step up your own efforts? This session discusses how and when you can safely ride the wave. Moderator: Vyki Englert, Co-Founder, Compiler.la (@vyki_e) Lilian Coral, Chief Data Officer, Office of Mayor Eric Garcetti, City of Los Angeles (@lcoral) Jim Green, Chief Information Officer, Department of Public Health, Los Angeles County (@mrjimgreen) Mark Greninger, Chief Data Officer, Los Angeles County Wendy Harn, Chief Data Officer, Technology and Support Division, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Dealing with the Information DelugePacific Ballroom 3Big data, the Internet of Things, video, social media, et al., are pushing organizations to reinvent how they handle, leverage and secure information. Unless the right foundation is in place, the vast potential of Big Analytics remains largely untapped. It’s all about data readiness, which hinges on adroit and astute data management. Fast Track SessionsCalifornia Grand BallroomCognitive TechnologiesCognitive is defined as intellectual activity (i.e., thinking, reasoning or remembering). In other words, what humans do. Cognitive technology thus means “able to perform tasks that only humans used to be able to do”, and it’s a science that is advancing exponentially. Are we in danger of becoming irrelevant? Not at all. Cognitive-based systems, such as IBM Watson, are designed not to replace us but to extend our cognition and free us to think more creatively. This session provides an introduction to a technology that has enormous potential and implications for government and society. Jeff Rogers, Director, Government Cognitive Solutions Team, North America, IBM (@jbrogersibm) Threat Analytics and Machine Learning – Protecting the Connected DatascapeCritical elements like IoT devices are imperative to security leaders. With over 20 billion new devices being added to the network by 2020 the threat landscape and expanding the attack surface are becoming nearly overwhelming and manual assessment and analysis of that data is impossible. This session will discuss how leveraging Machine Learning and massive data sets can provide an organization a model to help keep pace with threat propagation and manipulation.
