Jody Thompson HeadshotWork/Life Balance in a Networked World
Jody Thompson, Author

The 1950's work environment is colliding with the 21st Century. Everyone knows the workplace needs to change. Everywhere you look there's another article about generations colliding, retiring baby boomers, competing in global business markets, creating internal resiliency, adaptability and innovation engines, unified communications, going green, flexibility, and surviving change. The information is numbing.

Today it takes more creativity, more energy, and more effort to stay ahead of the curve, compete in the global marketplace and attract qualified employees.

But let's face it. The culture of work is not keeping up with the times and is especially challenging for government organizations.

Jody will show you how the new game in workplace culture, ROWE, is the foundation necessary to move your organization into the future. She will demonstrate how simple brilliance and common sense, along with passion and perseverance, can drive meaningful empowerment for employees and better results for all employers.

In this roundtable discussion, you will hear not only the results from this study, but from leaders in the public and private sector as they discuss their own experiences and what they expect from technology and technology leaders.

LUNCH KEYNOTE

Dan London HeadshotSurviving a Budget Crisis - Is there Another Way?
Dan London,
North America, Health & Public Service Operating Lead, Accenture

Despite indicators that the economy is recovering, state and local government budgets remain in a woeful state. Jurisdictions are forced to take dramatic measures to balance budgets, cutting service hours, closing cherished parks, even barring off roadside rest stops. In the midst of such cuts, it's difficult to find successful strategies. Perhaps a "government reset" is in order, where government leaders look for new ways to restructure their organizations.

In this session, Dan London will offer practical, time-tested suggestions on what jurisdictions should be doing now to prepare for the recovery. Suggestions include identifying, then focusing on core competencies; reducing duplication through consolidation; standardizing processes across the organization; and eliminating or significantly reducing programs of marginal benefit to citizens. He will provide tips on how to begin streamlining internal processes for common items, such as the purchase of goods and services; driving shared services; and leveraging new public and private partnerships.

GENERAL SESSION

Peter Doolan HeadshotSuper Size Me, Clash of the Titans and Other Lessons from the Private Sector

Peter Doolan,
Vice President and SVP, Public Sector, Oracle Corporation

Oracle has acquired more than 54 companies in the past 6 years including their most recent acquisition, Sun Microsystems. Each company brought with it a unique culture, a complete suite of information technology tools and infrastructure, and employees who were nervous about the changes in their lives and workplace.

With humor and candor, Peter Doolan will talk about how Oracle has addressed the challenges of creating one company from many of combining email accounts, data centers and teams into a cohesive unit. The lessons about what worked - and what hasn't - are sure to help New York government leaders as they go through many of the same challenges.

GENERAL SESSION

Pat Bakey HeadshotThe Accelerated Pace of Change:
Innovating and Delivering Value in Today's Environment

Pat Bakey, Executive Vice President, Strategic Industries, SAP

Our world continues to change at a dizzying pace - new technologies are being developed faster than ever and new ways of communicating are taking hold. In the midst of these rapid changes, there are opportunities. Opportunities to reach out and engage citizens in new, meaningful ways; opportunities to improve how services are delivered; and the opportunity to use tough budget times as a way to bring about a more efficient government.

How can organizations take advantage of these opportunities without threatening the stability that constituents expect from their government? Pat Bakey offers ideas for a path forward by using value management to help create a more nimble, responsive organization.

Gopal Kapur PhotoThe Beatings Will Continue Until Morale Improves

Gopal Kapur, Founder and President, Center for Project Management

Furloughs, budget cuts, hiring freeze and the threat of layoffs are creating havoc even in organizations that have never faced morale problems. In their responses to the Center for Project Management's 2009 annual survey, 66 percent of executives indicated that low team morale is a critical issue. Is your organization suffering from this malaise? If so, does your organization resort to "beatings" to improve performance? Is there another way? What is your role in improving morale?

Rather than sitting back in your office and fretting over the economic downturn, and the effect it is having on your staff and your peers, come learn the steps you can take to help improve the situation.
