Lessons Learned from Hurricane Ike
Hurricane Ike hit Galveston, Texas on the morning of September 13, 2008. It would become the 3rd most destructive hurricane to ever make landfall in the United States, caused damage in excess of $24 billion and triggered the largest evacuation in the history of Texas. It also became the largest search and rescue operation in U.S. history. The emergency management issues that such a disaster creates are almost unbelievable if you have not been involved. Steve Jennings was the Chief Information Officer for Harris County and a 34 year employee of the County in a variety of roles. He went through many disasters in that capacity and has lived to tell the tales. This address will focus on 34 years of experience in providing support during emergencies and will include key lessons learned that any organization will benefit from. He has recently been named Public Official of the Year by Governing magazine and was a 2009 Top 25 on Government Technology magazines Doers, Dreamers and Drivers list largely for his work on a public safety radio system that now serves over 300 federal, state and local organizations in Texas.
