The Florida Public Sector CIO Academy is the premier leadership event for Florida’s senior level technology executives with the intent to improve their management and business skills and to develop the IT leaders of the future. The purpose of this invitation-only event is to foster discussion and dialogue on what it means to be a successful CIO in the public sector and how to use Information Technology as a strategic tool. This event is a one-of-a-kind networking opportunity for government and industry executives to brainstorm how the latest technology trends can help transform government.
There’s a time to discuss technology and a time to discuss the leadership skills that will take us where we need to go. The inaugural CIO Academy will certainly provide some of both, but the heart and soul of this event is about expanding the scope of our IT management IQ. We view this as a unique opportunity for us to interact with our peers and industry partners in an entirely new way. Please join us as we discuss and forge our roles – in both sectors – in utilizing IT to transform government in the great state of Florida.

Keynote – Leadership in Times of ChangeRoom 208 (Auditorium)H. James Dallas, Author, Speaker, Consultant, Change Agent (@hjamesdallas) Change is rampant within and across all industries and society as a whole, driven in no small part by Information Technology. The increasing pace and degree of change are causing many people to struggle and, unfortunately, get left behind. This is particularly challenging to those who are tasked with leadership and team-building. This session will identify how change and culture are intertwined; why leaders often fail during times of change; and what you must know and do to not only succeed but also thrive. |

Featured Speaker – What Would MacGyver Do?Room 208 (Auditorium)Brian Elms, Director, Peak Academy and Analytics, City and County of Denver, Colorado (@DENPeakAcademy) In March, CBS announced the reboot of MacGyver. Like the 1980s, when the original TV series garnered a large following because of the inventive and resourceful character, today’s challenges mean we need more MacGyvers. The Denver Peak Academy fixes problems by helping public employees become somebody’s MacGyver – helping the City and County of Denver eliminate waste and continuously improve its business processes. Along the way, it has refined its processes by integrating behavioral science and extending its reach to public agencies across North America. In this session, Director Brian Elms explores how to innovate in a resource-deprived environment, including: Peak’s approach to process improvement and innovations, innovating without technology, and Peak’s tools and techniques. |

Featured Speaker – From the Bottom UpRoom 208 (Auditorium)Chad Pregracke, President and Founder, Living Lands & Waters Chad Pregracke, 2013 CNN Hero of the Year, is living proof that one person can make a difference. As the founder of America’s only “industrial strength” river clean-up organization, Chad tells a compelling, uplifting, and inspiring story about growing up on the river and how his experiences led to his unique vision to clean up the Mississippi River and start an internationally recognized not-for-profit, Living Lands & Waters. In this session, Chad takes us out on one of the world’s greatest waterways – a journey filled with endless challenges and gripping adventures – to inspire us to dream big, take action, collaborate, persevere and boldly lead in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds. |

Concurrent SessionsThe Changing Role of the CIO – What Is It, Anyway?Room 103 (1st Floor)For a while there, trendy C-suite titles were taking on a distinctly religious overtone. Chief Inspiration Officer. Chief Internet Evangelist. Chief Everything Officer. Things have settled down some, but the groundswell of chiefs in the last few years has left its mark, especially in functions related to IT. Chief data/privacy/performance/digital officers appear in government with increasing frequency. So where does that leave the role of the time-honored CIO? Or is it really all of the above? This session explores ways to operate more capably and comfortably in today’s fluid and quickly-evolving organizational structures. April Blackburn, Chief of Transportation Technology, Department of Transportation, State of Florida Steven Narvaez, CGCIO / IT Director, City of Deltona Florida’s Got Talent!Room 214 (2nd Floor)The IT landscape is dramatically changing – the technologies we use, the people we work with, and the way we deliver services are transforming at a pace previously unforeseen. With the “gray tsunami” looming large, how do we prepare to develop our next-generation workforce and where do we find worthy candidates? Perhaps they’re right under our noses. This session talks about today’s hiring climate, the make-up of a multigenerational workforce, the most important skill sets, getting the most out of the resources you already have, and practical strategies for building your future workforce from both within and without. Featured Speaker – Communicating in a Crisis - 30 Years of Work Destroyed in 30 SecondsRoom 208 (Auditorium)Anthony Huey, President, Reputation Management Associates (@anthonyhuey) Somewhere within every organization, a crisis is waiting to happen. Maybe tomorrow, maybe next year or even in five years; you can’t be sure what the crisis will be or when it will strike. But you can be sure that a crisis will put your organization’s (or your own) hard-earned image and reputation up for grabs. Learn how to control the flow of information and communicate with the media, stakeholders, bosses, peers and other audiences during a crisis. |

Concurrent SessionsThe Politics of ITRoom 103 (1st Floor)Have you ever heard it said that IT would be easy if it weren’t for the politics? It’s time to challenge that point of view. You can’t have one without the other. Our opening keynote speaker, James Dallas, emphatically states that “If you don’t like politics, you should get out of the game”. Politics is what CIO’s do. They have to please a wide variety of stakeholders, not just internally but externally. They have to build consensus and support in order to get anything done. And they have to remain diplomatic every step of the way. This session discusses the political side of IT leadership and how to win more often. Moderator: Doug Smith, Chief Information Officer, Office of the Attorney General, State of Florida Halsey Beshears, Representative, District 7, Florida House of Representatives, State of Florida Ken Granger, Consultant, Capital City Consulting, LLC Damu Kuttikrishnan, Chief Information Officer, Department of Revenue, State of Florida Ignacio Sanchez, Chief Information Officer, Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, State of Florida Jim Valveri, Enterprise Account Executive, VMware Kristina Wiggins, Chief of Staff, Agency for State Technology, State of Florida Training Your Next Interim CIORoom 214 (2nd Floor)If you are a CIO, you won’t be there forever. And if you’re not a CIO (yet), that applies to your boss, too. So no matter which direction you’re looking – up or down – it’s time to start preparing for the inevitable before stuff hits the fan. This session takes a close look at the “blocking and tackling” required to be an effective CIO, including demonstrating IT maturity, making smart decisions, team building, budgeting, auditing, accountability, legislative relations, and all the “little” things that can make or break a CIO. Scott McPherson, Chief Information Officer, House of Representatives, State of Florida Curtis Unruh, Deputy State Chief Information Officer/Executive Director, Agency for State Technology, State of Florida |

Concurrent SessionsCybersecurity and Leadership: The Good, Bad and Ugly Room 103 (1st Floor)CIOs and CISOs constantly wrestle with the need for high-level strategizing and planning while also having to slog through all the mundane daily tasks that keep the hounds at bay. So maybe it’s time to “operationalize” your security approach. In other words, apply a more systematic approach to automating security tasks and processes, freeing you up to do what leaders do. The old approaches just don’t cut it anymore. A sea change is underway, and this session discusses how to keep your head above water. Moderator: Wallace Sann, Chief Technology Officer, Public Sector, ForeScout Technologies (@wsann) Jason Allison, Chief Information Officer, State of Florida Danielle Alvarez, Chief Information Security Officer, State of Florida Michael Johnston, Chief Information Officer, Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, State of Florida Joseph Martin, Chief Information Officer, Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), State of Florida Chris Schreiber, Consulting Systems Engineer, FireEye Transforming Vision into RealityRoom 214 (2nd Floor)What is a vision? Do you have a vision for your organization? How do you communicate that vision? And to whom? How do you empower others to achieve your vision? How do you transform that vision into reality? How do you measure progress and success? In this session, a panel of fellow visionaries will provide answers and share their lessons learned while traveling this rewarding and sometimes treacherous road. Moderator: Brent Holladay, Chief Deputy, Information Services, Lake County Clerk & Court Pete Butler, Director, Technology Practice at National Strategies, State of Florida Robert Kneip, Chief of Staff, Jeff Atwater, Department of Financial Services, State of Florida Sam Verghese, Vice President, Acreage Consulting |
